hissing

hey guys, a couple of times when i push my car past 3800rpm i get a loud hissing from behind the dashboard...drivers side i believe. It sounds like an air leak or something. Only happens sometimes though...any ideas?

My speedo busted and now I have to get a new one, which means my original 46000km car is gonna have a tampered odometer (to turn it back to 46,000 from 200,000) and that is not good for resale if they buyer notices its tampered!

WTF! How can a speedo/odometer bust!

Hmmm..... I must have picked up a cat too. Except mine doesn't mind rpms until above 5000. It's only done it once so far though, with the heater controls directed to floor and dash. Any other animals causing this?

Your speedometer cable is prolly broken...replace it and your ODO and speedo should work fine.

As for the hissing, check the ACV valve and any vac. lines on the passenger side of the engine. The air pump may be a good place to check out as well.

Mine does the same thing only once in awhile though! Hissing or water rushing sound from behind the dash. ACV ? How do I check it?

Thanks.

are you guys sure that its my speedo cable? My mechanic has told me to buy a new instruement cluster. He says he has never seen a speedo cable broken in the middle, so he guesses it is the instrument cluster? But that $75...don't want to buy it if I'm not sure thats the problem.

Is there any way I can check if my speedo is busted or my cable?

Thanks

also, the speedometer would sometimes go crazy on its own (for the past 2 months in winter here). It would make a vibaration sound, go up to 140 by itself....shake violently and then come back down when I stopped.

Hope this helps with the diagnosing...got no money for this damn repair!

A rustling leaves/rushing water sound is normal. Mazda has a TSB for this if you want to get rid of it (something about installing an orifice in the heater hose). You can confirm by checking if it only happens when the heat is on; ie turn the temp to full cold, if it goes away then this is your problem. You might wanna burp your cooling system.

Pull the speedo cable out. It attaches to the tranny and is routed to the back of the instrument cluster. You then turn one end of it and see if the other end turns as well. It's worth a try at least. If your cluster is shot I think there are some places that repair gauges...there is a place in California that does it and I have not the slightest clue what their name is. Try searching Yahoo or something.
