High RPMS
What rpm will a stock S4 stop either revving or self destruct? also the only thing you have to do to hold hi-revs is have good intake/exhaust and porting (for air and fuel) and have your engine balanced right? The reason I ask is because me and a local mechanic were tlaking about it and he will not believe me that a factory engine built in 86 will hold an 8000 RPM rev in stock form. This is for a N/A also.He works as a mechanic but I havent seen any papers

An 86 should run 8k no problem. There will probably be a cooling issue due to the water pump slipping a lil, if you decide to run it like that for any extended period of time.

Type Well?
BEFORE anyone mentions on my typing skills I am one step ahead of you and I know I suck
To clear things Up.I want to know what the highest RPM a stock engine will achieve before self destruction or loses the ability to flow enough air to keep reving.

It depends on how you define "self destruct". A stock-port 86 will rev to 8k no problem. But it's probably not a good thing, as holding such high revs for a long time in an engine not designed for it will cause the stationary gear to flex, thus flattening your apex seal springs. The engine will rev much higher than that before the VE falls to such a point as to prevent it from revving further, but your rotor will contact the housing before that happens (excessive stationary gear flex).
In a "built" rotary, 12,000 RPM is possible, no problem. In yours, I wouldn't worry about it. Just get a series V N/A in there, and they'll rev it all day long.

I don't care about mine revving
I don't even want to attempt to hold my car at a rev like that.I am wondering what they will rev to before they die.Like 10,000 RPM ? mine gets revved to 7 and that is is until i build a better motor designed tot ake the rev though

i cant remember to good but i think i had my rexy at 6000+ rpms in 5th for about a minute or more. even longer i think in 4th. i was racing my pops 3rd gen. i was doing 140 according to the speedo, i noticed the temp gauge rise and let off quick. i wish these cars came with an electric water pump.
the most i have taken mine is up to 8000rpms. with out any problems. i do notice i get a wierd smell after high rpm runs, something like burned oil, yuck!!! but the car always seems to like the high rpms.

lol i use to take my 85 to about 8500 k while doing burnouts, i think it liked it b/c it never cut out, lost a large amount of hp,or broke.it wasnt that i ment to hold it there but when i started burning the tires they were hard to keep spinning at a set point on the rpm's needless to say it broke months later due to my dumb *** letting it overheat

My stock '87 na will do 8K easily. I wouldn't push one that isn't balance beyond about 8500. My fun engine runs at 9500 very nicely, however everything has been balanced to 10,500 and street ported. As far as temp, the underdrive pulley is very nice for running at high RPM. A few friends have blown tired rotaries,~120K miles, at 8500 RPM's. 8000-8500 is really about all you should probably run....besides you aren't gaining anymore power beyond about 7800 with stock injectors and ECU.
