High rpm problems

When I take my 88 n/a to redline the engine feels like its not running properly. Starting at about 5 tho rpms, and mostly in 3rd gear, the engine sputters and feels like it loses power. I havent done it much cuz i just cruz around town and I have to go way too fast on our highway to test it out. First and second are not nearly as bad, but still have those symptoms, second being worse than first. Durring free rev it doesnt happen. Other than this the car runs fine and keeps up with my friends VR-6. My freind said it could possibly be my aftermarket exhaust not allowing my 6th port to open because of loss of exhaust pressure. Does this sound like the right diagnosis, and if so can I take any steps to remedy this problem? -Thanks

icemark made it pretty clear in another post that the aux ports are triggered by exhaust velocity not back pressure.

I'm definitely not an expert but he sure sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

Good luck!

It sounds like it could be a plugged-up catalytic converter. Do you have one and when was the last time that it was replaced?

Try Racingbeat. They have a exhaust system that is setup for these cars.

I do have a cat, the exhaust is a Magnaflow, I think its 2.5, but the previous owner had it installed so im not exactly sure. The previous owner was NOT an rx7 guy and ha 60 weight oil in the motor, so anything is possible lol. Plus I think that he rarely ever drove the car fast, probebly never taking the car toi redline.

Check the plugs and coils/ignitors.
