Talking Help a Turbo newbie out

Well I'm getting ready to do a NA TII conversion and I barely understand the dark side.

The Jspec will have a 2.5 DP CS or RB dunno yet. a CS single cat back.

I will have the stock TID on until I fab one myself and use my Cold Air box I made.

I am buying a HKS FCD for back up but I understand I am going to get some pretty good boost creep.

If anyone has pics or a write up on porting the Waste gate on the stock S4 turbo that would be awesome.

I understand you can make the hole a little bigger than the flapper itself so it doesn't get stuck.

I've never opened up a turbo before so I need to know if there will be any gaskets I need to replace when I open up the exhaust side to port it.

Just leave it alone and save up for a S5 turbo and manifold, that's what i would do.

Well I can't save up since I have to drive this daily driver and as soon as I get it running I have to go to work.

If I have an entire engine our of the car it would be easier to port and I don't want the engine creeping when I'm driving to work and blowing.

Porting out the s4 wastegate is both easy and fun. I have done a few and you just need some kind of rotary cutting tool, preferably a die grinder with a carbide burr. I haven't taken it past the flapper but just a little under. The only gaskets there are the gaskets from manifold to turbo and turbo to dp. Also, a good tip for removing the turbine housing is to just back out the two bolts that but up against the flanges a little at a time and it will push the housing off nice and easy. Good luck.

You shouldn't have to replace any gaskets, unless they are litteraly falling apart. The easiest way to port the waste gate is to buy a 3/4" drill bit from Home Depot. I should take about 60 sec to drill all of the way through

And with a 2.5" DP you should not have any creeping prolems with the stock turbo.

With a cone filter and the exhaust he's planning he will have boost creep. I've seen mine off the scale in cold weather running 2.5 in all the way back to stock mufflers.

The flap getting stuck isn't an issue. If you port the wastegate out to the size of the stock flap it'll still creep. If you port it bigger than the stock flap it will help stop creep but you'll increase turbo lag because the wastegate is always leaking. You should have a turbo shop replace the flap with a bigger one (or DIY if you can) and port to te edge of the bigger flap, making sure it can seal when closed.

Thanks Guys.

I saw a therad a while ago about a guy using a honda valvle for the flapper here.

Does anyone have pics of the flapper and how it's mounted. If it's not too hard to remove and replace then I could probably weld up a new flapper.

I had a stainless steel washer welded onto my stock flapper. I posted a couple of pics in this thread https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=242089 . I have a full turbo back RB exhaust and I can hold 5 psi of boost.

Here's another pic about halfway through porting. You can see the size of the stock flapper and how much bigger the stainless washer makes it.

That's not a bad idea there. Hell I could do that at work.
