thats fucked up......

so you were letting out the clutch during a shift then BAM your car is moving backwards?????

maybe a busted shifter....or return spring perhaps.....look at the FSM

edit: does the shifter feel really sloppy?

Yea the shifter feels sloppy. I was reading on some posts that I might have to drop the tranny and fit the gears back in place.

Get the shifter off first. I suspect wasted bushings. I wonder if the roll pin that holds the shifter broke and allowed the shift rod to engage into the 5/R linkage?

search around, worn out shifter bushings can eventually cause the shifter to completely come out of the shifter bore, the shifter flopping around in there can force the transmission into any single gear and in turn not be able to pull it out of that gear.

do as said, pull the shifter off, it isn't difficult, not even difficult for me to need to explain how to remove it as it is that self explanatory.

Does it still go into the gears.. 1st. 2nd, 3rd, etc but just move in reverse... or does it not go into the gears at all.. shifter won't go to 1st gear postion? As if you hit a wall?

Reverse switch is stuck, I've dealt with this on my S5 N/a a couple of times(wierd my two S4s never did that ****)

Remove the tranny cross member and lower the tranny, supporting it with a floor jack.

Unscrew the electronic switch that goes into the tranny and then you will have yo use a small tool to un-jam it from the reverse position. I normally use small/medium hex/alen keys using the short side to probe into the port and the long side as a handle.

Once you are able to free it up it should shift fine. Replace the cross member and you're done.

Some suggested modifications to eliminate future problems is to add an additional washer shim. I used a little gear oil to add some lubrication in an attempt to make it harder for it to jam-up. I couldn't find a washer/shim otherwise I would have used that.

Good Luck,

Santiago

PS- This should normally take around 2 hours if you know what you're doing otherwise it might take around 3-4 if you're a little newbish....

^^^ damn good info man, its def a s5 thing too. I had it happen on my s5 tranny, reverse worked and every other gear just stalled. We tried unjamming it but ti was really done, i got a s4 tranny for $65 and have been problem free since(knocks on wood).

I was going to say that this very thing happened to me on my 90 gtu. I thought that my clutch was fried because mine was stuck in first gear, got it out, and then it would not go into any gear at all. So the next day i did exactly what 87 said and i never had a prob after that. and to think that I was going to pay 450 to have a whole new clutch put in.

doesn't appear as munched as i imagined by your description, try doing as 87rx suggested.

you still need new shifter bushings though.
