the hook is the return spring for left to center shifter movement, they tend to break a lot on the second gens, most people tend to live with it is as the transmission needs to be removed completely to do the repair.

Yeah I just replaced that spring in mine, as the engine and trans are out. It's kinda a pita because you have to make sure the shifter block is in the right position before driving the roll pin out. Then the extension housing of the trans has to come off so you can put the new spring on. BTW that spring was only like 5 bux.

I don't understand connector. I was referring to the roll pin that keeps the block that the bottom of the shifter engages to the shift rod. Is that pin broken. If it is, and you wish to also replace that broken spring, then you MUST remove the transmission. The casing has to come apart as well. Maybe you should post pics so we understand.

You have to slide the mechanical switch thats inside that port forward.

When you have the car in reverse it slides towards the rear of the car and has a raised part that presses against the elec. switch.

Your situation has the switch stuck like that so you have to force it to slide towards the front of the car.

It will take some time as its not that easy. For the most part keep trying untill you get lucky and slide it forward(towards the nose of the car...)

Poking the port will do squat btw....

Maybe my ghetto style illustrations will help identify the task at hand.

This is basicaly a top cross sectional view of the inside of the tranny.
You need to insert your tool(whatever you're able to make work....) like so and use the handle as a lever to throw the thing forward.

Here is my illustration of what it should look like when you're done.

This is the 'normal' non-reverse position.

Ok my Transmission is doing the exact same thing. It's stuck in reverse and I can shift it in to first and second. When my shifter is in Neutral it looks like 1987RX7guy first drawing and when it is in 2nd it looks like the 2nd drawing by 1987RX7guy (is that characteristic of this problem?). It doesn't want to budge out of that position. Is it a complicated fix to take it apart and fix it?? I have never worked on a transmission before.

This is a buddy posting for DJgeque.

We stripped the tranny down, I wasn't able to do the quick fix that was illustrated above. We took the tail housing off and even though the shift linkage was in neutral, reverse, as expected was engaged. We also noticed that reverse and 5th were very easy to engage/dissengage when compared to the other selector shafts for the remaining gears.

There was no detent ball in the shifter detent for 5th/reverse. We hope this will keep this from happening again. It is likely that someone can lose/forget the shifter detent when rebuilding/taking a part the tranny, so if your selector shaft is loose, that might be one thing to check.

Don't be scared of of removing the tranny.. I haven't opened it up, but dropping the tranny was usually no more than a 45 minute job for my buddy and I.. I know I went through 3 used trannies before I got one that worked.. I was getting them for 50 dollars a pop.. so it was no big deal to swap trannies 1 saturday morning.. getting the fluid in was always the test of patience for us.

We took the tranny apart in my garage, he's had to pull his tranny a couple of times before as well.

reverse switch on that "R" box is,, on the last pic,, the one on the left of the box,, with prongs pointing rearwards towards the diff

some examples in FC are 4 wire ,, the pairs are the diagonally opposite wires off the switch
these tell the ECU, 5th gear and reverse conditions

the other switch is the neutral switch

on " M " ( NA boxes ),, both switches look like this compact type , so care must be taken working them out

however,, for you,, the "R" box has the obvious reverse switch
