yea, thanks for asking vaughnc.

okay to start out i replaced my stock turbo with another after the previous owner had something flied into it.

i replaced it with another stocker, and thought i put everything back on correctly, still sure i am ....

anyways i go to start it after checking everything over and it starts but makes a popping sound lke pop pop really faint like a lawnmower and shuts off. i do it again same thing.

ive asked on the teamfc3s board and they say its a vacuum leak. and it seems like it too cause the car died. the thing i dont understand as usually when i have a vacuum leak the car doesnt make any noises it just sputters and dies. this leak or whatever it was made a tin can kind of sand like pop pop pop?

im stuck, they said check the afm to see if it is plugged in i ended up unscrewing it though and accidentally pulled it out of the solder points. i tried to reconnect em, thought i did.

went to start it, and now it just cranks but doesn't turn over.

man

thanks in advance

dont know about the other issue with the popping but with the AFM you can put that together.
though I had to pop the plastic top of mine to do so.

there is a long piece on the connector that goes onto the piece that slides and is connected to the flapper door.
the other two should be easy to put on. they dont fit any other way.

then when you are done just pop the plastic top back on and put a little more sealer on it if you like.

or better yet just get another AFM.

dont know much about turbos though so can't help on the other issue

had the same poblem last night with my buddys 87 TII

He had accidently pulled the electrical connector off when he was working under the hood. It would start up, pop, pop, die. Then it just crancked, no fire. I found the connector disconnected, and it works like it is suppose to.

fixed the afm, car runs now. as soon as i moved this connector around i heard a relay click and i knew it would work.
i put in a new gasket from the turbo to manifold, you know the 4 bolt one, and i was wondering when do i have to retighten it? cause i heard the first time you put it on it loosen's the bolts.

also im getting a some smoke right out of the area of the turbo/manifold area. now i dont have any heatshields on and the 2 bolts that bolt the heat shield on the pre-cat are open...would this be where its coming from?

also, would it be the new gasket? i bought the turbo with around 80k on it, it looked fine...i heard they smoke if they've been sitting for awhile, but i can't tell if it's coming from that.

something is still loose cause im getting some popping and the car sounds like it is a tinkering lawnmower.

i think the bac valve is messed up or not functioning. cause the green plug in that goes in the bottom of it cracked and the idle is bouncy like i have cam gears or something

so if i could get some of your thoughts..so i can start getting those bugs out.

and how i should drive it. its not my daily driver though since its not smogged yet. but i want to be sure everything is right so i can go burn some rubber down the street.

thanks

getting turbo off

I bought a new gasket too. I got as far as having the four nuts and the bottom precat nut off and couldn't get them to budge. Put everything back together for now, but is there anything you did to get them off.

well, the bottom pre-cat bolt is the easiest obviously cause it's right in front of ya. as far as getting the other 2 off do you mean you can't find em or reach em? or just not strong enough?

to get those off, get your biggest rachet and one of those long *** extensions i think its like a 12" extension with a swively thing on the end. put your socket at the end and start getting dirty. your going to have to do this for the other bolt too.

spray some wd-40 or liquid wrench on em too. the only reason it took me so long to remove the turbo is the fact the pre-cat is so dang big. and the bolts have been on thier for ever

just be patient you can pm me if you have anymore questions. after what i went through removing it, i want to share so you don't have to go through same.

Question AFM Rebuild

I did the same thing with my AFM... popped the screws off and screwed the whole unit!! I took the plastic top off and fixed the long piece of flexable metal. Then I tried it out... It didn't work..
Did you seal the unit before trying it? Is it critical to seal the unit?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sean

I never resealed it
was kinda in a hurry and did a jury rig
I am going to take it and seal it this weekend though

I think I might have got lucky
though you will want to make sure you get that plastic piece popped all the way in
