HELP ME, coolant smell at 5krpm

please tell me this doesnt mean i have a blown coolant seal. I just got done doing a s5 manifold swap into my 87, it ran perfectly before this and i just got it running good with everything hooked up right except for the vdi and 5/6 ports wich im doing later today. i took it for a drive to make sure my idle was ok and now when ever im at full throttle around 5000 rpm i start to smell coolant realy bad, i cant see it leaking anywhere in the engine compartment and there are no drips below the car so i thought maybe its evaparating as soon as it hits the block from wherever its leaking so i went out and redlined it infront of my house and immidiately popped the hood with a shoplight to see if there was any liquid and there is none. if anyone knows what this could be please tell me. thanks

coolant seal?
take off radiator cap and run car
maybe rev it up too
see if you see airbubbles

if you see air bubbles...
i know of a few good suicide techniques....
we could try them together

never found bubbles when my coolant channel/seal blew massively in my 88. symptoms for me were rapid and steady coolant loss and white smoke... also hard starting and poor running. seems like you would be able to smell it whatever the rpm ... or it would leak regardless of engine speed.

maybe it's an exhaust leak... are you sure it's coolant that you're smelling?

^ ding ding - if its a coolant seal it would burn coolant all the time, also
your post would probably ask "why do i leave a smoke screen behind me and
have to constantly top off my coolant"
its hard to say whats wrong, if there are no leaks, no excess smoke or
comsumption problems then you dont really have a problem
Question - you say you could smell it at 5k rpm, does that mean that when it idles
there are no peculiar odours present? or and redline the are none present?

but i really dont think you have a problem, just check the above symptoms and
if it checks out then have fun with the open road

i will bet you that what you said (if its a coolant seal it would burn coolant all the time) is wrong.

because it might be a leak that doesnt really leak until there is too much pressure from this high rpm?
maybe that is why he could only smell it at the high rpm?

well he needs to post more info. like if he's losing coolant in the first place. and i can't see how he'd smell it when the car is going that fast and it would be evaporated and coming from the tail pipes of the car.

well thanks for all the info guys. im still not smelling anything at low rpm and yes im am absolutely positive its coolant that im smelling. im thinking what slpin is, its not doing it untill there is a lot of pressure at high rpm. i went out and drove it again trying to get my idle right and as soon as i smell it the windshield fogs up like its being burnt on the outside of the engine and coming up through the vent by the windshield wipers(on the outside, not the defrosters). i saw a drip on the heater hose by the firewall but its not a constant leak and if its leaking there i dont think it would be hitting the exhaust. i dont think my transmission would be hot enough to boil it like that.

sounds like an external leak if your exhaust isn't smoking and especially since it fogs the windshield.

once again though... i'd check your coolant level to make sure and also take care of the hoses. at higher pressure that drip could turn into a steady stream and could hit your exh. manifold or cats. revving it and watching the leaks will tell you if it's the hoses. i've never heard of an outer coolant seal blowing, but then again i haven't heard everything. if fixing the leaky hoses doesn't work you should use flourescent dye and use a black light to find the leak. nothing else i can think of.

it sounds like you havent tried blipping the throttle by hand while looking under the hood yet.. just start your car and push down on your throttle linkage and look for leaks.. ill bet you find one.
