Unhappy HELP! i just failed smog

help, i just failed my smog check
it was really strange
i failed the 15mph test but passed the 25mph test...
I failed the HC part

my results are below
15mph | 1834 rpm | 14.8 %CO2 | 0 %O | 212 Measured :: 118 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.45 Meas 0.75 Max CO (%) | 64 Meas 799 Max NO (PPM) (tested A/F Ratio 14.1)

25mph | 2042 rpm | 14.2 %CO2 | 1 %O | 45 Measured :: 93 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.07 Meas 0.63 :: Max CO (%) | 276 Meas :: 738 Max NO (PPM) (tested A/F 15.0)

what should I do?

forgot to say, everything with emissions in, and a NEW CAT, electric airpump connected to the cat also...

what state are you in? 118 hc is strict. mine was 141 as max. I didn't pass the first time, I put in a high temp thermostat and a half cup full of acetone in my tank and i passed at 141 on the dot.

California.... it was sent to a test-only smog..

man, something is fishy my last year's record was this

15mph | 803 rpm | 10.2 %CO2 | 6.4 %O | 20 Measured :: 120 MAX HC (PPM) | 0 Meas :: 1 Max CO (%) | no NO tested

25mph | 2590 rpm | 9.5 %CO2 | 7.3 %O | 15 Measured :: 140 MAX HC (PPM) | 0 Meas :: 1 Max CO (%) | no NO tested

it shouldn't be that much off

from 2002

15mph | 2049 rpm | 14.5 %CO2 | 0.4 %O | 25 Measured :: 118 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.18 Meas 0.75 Max CO (%) | 129 Meas :: 1052 Max NO (PPM)

25mph | 1929 rpm | 14.5 %CO2 | 0.4 %O | 25 Measured :: 93 MAX HC (PPM) | 0.17 Meas :: 0.63 Max CO (%) | 113 Meas :: 912 Max NO (PPM)

Sounds like your main cat is failing.

The NOx is still low so the ECU is reading the O2 sensor just fine (ruling out those two), and your CO is fine so the combustion mixture is okay.

Sounds like the cat is failing.

Perhaps try the ol' alcohol trick? empty tank + 1 gal of ethel alcohol + fill tank to 1/4 - gingerly take to emisions place - pass - then fill up the tank.

what do you mean? Clean pipe your ****? So lets see....going with out a cat and emissions will get you in a lot a trouble, is that what you are saying? Im not following.
Say its your cats, whats cheaper, pay off 80 bux(plus more hp) to pass or 120+ for a new cat + money for the test? Exactly

Icemark, i just brought a BRAND NEW catco cat

but u think its a cat failure.... i wonder why that is happening...

one thing is he clipped the spark plug cable on the leading and he couldn't read my RPM rating, it was bouncing around at 3000 to 6000 on his reader.....
i was wondering then if it is the cause of my CDI....

yep, that could do it too.

When Installing CDI systems on CA I always make a plug and a jumper plug for when I have to do emissions testing.

But he should be able to tap onto the diagnotic connector at the trailing coil (which will give a better signal anyway, since it is a summed signal).

Sounds like your air pump isnt getting air to the cat to light it off.. Maybe your ACV malfunctioning... I just gut the damn things and let them pump air to the cats full time (my cat only stays on for emissions testing.)

Ah.. Okay, you are using a Vette pump. Did you just leave it on for the test?

i let the ECU do the work but i've tested it before and at 15mph, from 1000-2700 rpm, the airpump will be on

but the fuse burnt after i checked the car (after the test)..... i wonder if the fuse burnt before i got to the test and that could have caused my failure...

but that doesn't explain why 25mph test was better than 15mph... if anything it should be worse...
