Help with directions to replace alt belt
Can some point me to some simple directions to replace my alternator belt. The mazda manual isn't real clear. I'm far from a experienced mechanic, but I've done the basics to my rx7, like brakes, window motors and radiator.

Umm, loosen the bolt on the alternator, take off the old belt by slipping it around the fan, slip new one around the fan, put on pulleys, tighten belt by moving alternator up till it's snug, and then tighten bolt. Should have about a half inch of play top to bottom when it's on, give or take. If it's too snug it'll mess up the bearing in there.
I can't remember if you have to take off the ac/ps/air pump belts first since I don't have ac or ps, but it's just about the same to take those off, but the other ones might have something else to loosen.

You'll need to loosen all the other belts because it is at the rear.
Loosen air pump by loosening the bolt that holds it in place on the curved slider bracket thing. Loosen that, and the air pump moves to release the belt.
Loosen the two long tensioning bolts for the AC and PS. Loosen them an inch or so. To free up the AC and PS pulleys for movement, you need to crack loose the big nuts on the front of the pulleys. Then those will move.
The alt can be loosened by the one bolt on the curved slider bracket thingy, like the air pump.
Pull all the other belts off their pulleys. Take the new alt belt, and work it around the fan blades, one or two blades at a time. Work them past the other belts.
Put them all back in their original places and tighten them to the specs in the factory service manual.

thanks for the info, one of the things I wasn't sure about was whether I had to remove the fan. sounds like all I have to do is loosen everything slip the air pump, ac, and ps belts off the pullys, then put the alt belt on, then reinstall the other belts. sounds pretty easy.

Not so easy to get the air pump loose
I just went to check it out all the bolts and as usual nothings easy. The air pump swing adj bolt is underneath and very hard to get to. Looks like my best bet is a short open end wrench
now it makes sense, I was wondering why my alt belt broke, because I had a mechnic replace all the belts 2 years ago. He must have taken the easy way out and didn't do the 2 inner belts. Because now the ac and pw belts look new and the air pump belt looks old and of course my alt belt broke and is gone
Any suggestions or special tools to get to the air pump bolt ? Do I have to take off the rad cover.
And I'll be paying that mechanic a visit.
