Help with detaching engine from transmission
Hi,
I'm trying to pull the engine out of my 87 TII. The transmission won't detach from the engine. I'm pretty sure I've removed all the bolts. Two on the bottom, the one connecting to the starter, one on the passenger side, one on the driver side. There is still one more on the top that's facing a different directing than all the rest of the bolts; does it have to come out too? I've heard it's only used for alignment and is not attached to the transmission... If it has to come out, any advice on how to get to it?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

I had the same problem while removing my engine recently.
If you're absolutely positive you have all the bolts out (they're kinda hard to miss) then the best thing you can do is wiggle it back and forth a bunch until it gives, which it has to sooner or later. I wouldn't recommend trying to pry it apart with anything for running the risk of breaking something important.
And yes, there's one bolt that is there for alignment, it's the bolt that also attaches the eye-loop for the engine hoist.

ok.. so the top bolt I was looking at is probably not the alignment bolt. Any advice on how to get to the top bolt on the bellhousing? I'm trying a wrench right now..

Yup, that one sucks. It's somewhat easier to get to if you can reach around the bellhousing from underneath, but since you're removing the engine instead of the tranny, you'll have heat shields and exhaust in the way.
I used a wrench with a short extender, a u-joint, and then a long extender. And I was very, very, very patient.

I took off the UIM and removed the top bellhousing bolt. The bolt under the starter is also out. I wiggled it back and forth... no luck. Do i need to release the clutch or something? or is that FD's only?
Again, thanks for the help!

You only need to release the clutch in FDs because of their "pull type clutch." Otherwise make sure that you go all the way around the bellhousing and make sure that all of the bolts are gone even the ones under the starter. For the one on the top either remove the UIM or make a funkey contraption with a couple universal joints to get at it. Once you do that Just jiggle the hell out of it back and forth and it will come out no problem. Give me a PM if you are still having problems.

There's no need to mess with the clutch at all. As long as you got all of the bolts out, it's a matter of prying it apart. I do know that a lot of people prefer to undo the motor mounts and tip the engine back when removing the tranny. You'll need a cherry picker for that though.
