hell froze over
Depends on wheter it is the motor or the switch causing the problem.
Pull the door off, find the 2 leads coming from the window motor. Connect 1 to each side of a 12v power source, and it should raise the window. If it doesnt, switch the connectors and it will go in the oppisite direction.
If niether of those work, your motor is bad.

The motors rarely fail.  I tend to blame the switches (the driver's side window switch CAN affect the passenger side window switch when the "lock out" switch fails) or the electrical wiring first...

Ya, I had tons of problems with my swtich. Problem is the passenger side ground and power come through the drivers side switch (cause of the lock out thing), so if the drivers side goes bad, so does the passenger side.
Alot of the problem can lie in the contacts of the switch. If they look bad, clean them up with some electrical contact cleaner. You can get it at radio shack or the auto parts store.

take out the switch for the power window and clean the little metal pieces that rock to make a connection. open it up u will see what i mean, they are brass looking, and get black with dirt quickly and frequently. it doesn't take long and since your window goes down it seems everything else works, mine used to do that and this fixes it every time

I have been without a working passenger window for over a year on my 88' vert. I checked the motor and found it was not working. Checked all signals and it was getting power. Took the motor off and inspected it. Still wouldn't work.
I went to Hayes rotory and asked them about it. They said it probably wasen't my motor? I'm thinking, "how the hell could this be?" I checked to see if it was getting power, and it was! I should pull a motor off my 91 and see if it will work on the 88.

When it happens again, look for an s5 replacement switch.
Mazda improved the switch in the 89-92 models. It fits in a little deeper, so you have to carve out some of the plastic foam under it for clearance.

A problem I have had with all my FCs and all the ones I've been in is the rubber "guide" on the inside coming loose and rubbing on the glass. And it won't allow the window to go up unless you pull it while hitting the switch. Might want to check that. You can easily check the switch if you pull the door panel off and jumper the motor. Can't remember how exactly the wires need to go but one combination makes the window go up, one make it go down. Isn't hard to figure out. If nothin happens, time for a new motor.
