Headlights

so my headlights both don't light, and don't pop up. I replaced the relay with a different one out of a parts car, that didn't change it. I changed the 2nd relay from the left in the front of the car, with 4 wires... just to be clear.

Headlight fuse is (well was last time I checked anyways) intact. The "retractor" fuse under the hood is intact as well.

I guess I should replace the switch at this point?

yea, try another switch...

also check the harness that plugs into the switch for signs of burnt/hot wires and connections.

found another switch!

tried the switch.
no luck.

also the headlight retractors do not seem to have any power to them at all, usuallyw ith the battery connected if you try and manually open a headlight door it'll "stop" you after you've turned the **** a few times... the car doesn't do that anymore.

Any ideas!?

how did the harness going to the switch look? fine Im assuming?

FWIW - I had a tonne of trouble with my headlights/running lights. Replaced the switch and got nothing..........my harness had 2 patch wires, they looked fine, but only after re-doing the solder on them (yes the previous owner even soldered them) did my problems go away.

Im sure you don't have patch wires or would have mentioned it, but just a FYI....maybe check all the pins on the plug as well to make sure they are getting good connection.

Have you checked for power to the H/L motors?

all the wires looked fine. There are no patch wires or anything, this is the first time I've ever had trouble with the healights on this car. I should also note that the parking lights work, just not the headlights or the headlight motors. The instrument panel lamps and etc all light as well.

no power at the motors. Headlight relay definaly works, cos I wired a switch up to it. No power to it either.

Any ideas here, common people, I know I'm not the only one to have headlight issues with an FC

Parking lights and gauges light with the headlight switch in both park and headilght positions.

Highbeams don't work - the indicator doesn't even light.
Motors don't open the headlight doors either - which really makes it look like the switch BUT I swapped it for a known good one (out of my vert) and no luck, they still didn't work.

doesn't matter, headlights and parking lights are not even on the same circuit or use anything of the same wiring

First your bumps has been deleted. Bumps are forbidden here in the 2nd Gen RX-7. And did we need to start another thread on this??? Same problem, three people, all in the last two days and three different threads. Maybe if people were not too busy bumping their threads, one of the three (who all bumped multiple times) would have seen one of the other threads, and we call could have worked together fixing the problem!

From your description you have a blown fuse or a bad headlight switch, or a bad headlight relay.

The Red/White coming from [CR1] in the above picture is coming from the headlight switch, and is a ground signal.

The fact that you don't have the high beam indicator, indicates the firs thing to look at is a bad fuse, because as the diagram clearly shows, it comes from the same power as the headlights.

Then the next step would be looking at the switch. Are we getting a ground on the relay trigger wire (white/blue at the relay, or red/white at the switch) when the switch is on at the relay??? If not, then you have a bad switch. If there is a ground and you don't have a bad fuse, then you have a bad relay.

the switch, relay and fuses are fine, as in my post above. so this problem has nothing to do with any of them.

The highbeam indicator works now that I "bypassed" the headlight circuit with my switch.

But there seems to be a problem with the parking light circuit as well, as the instrument panel lights don't light up very brightly and it seems to draw a metric ton of power. I'm thinking short! But if you say that the headlights don't even share any wiring with that then I don't see how that can be the same problem.

edit: didn't see your new post there... yes I did test the switch, well not really - I test it every night when I drive my vert home as I pulled the switch out of it. the switch is 100% not defective. The fuses are intact and have been tested as well. I tested the relay as per my '87 FSM today - it works fine according to that procedure.

Sounds like the switch is failing, make sure there are no burnt pins at the headlight switch.

again, if you ground the Red/white at the switch, or the White/Blue at the headlight relay...do the headlights come on??? If they do, the problem is in the switch, if they don't then the problem is the relay or later.

I haven't grounded that wire at the relay, I will try that.

I just rana + wire to the red/green wire at the relay to make the lights work, and that did it.

the switch can't be the problem, it works just fine in the convertable and not at all in this.. I don't see how it could work in one car and not in the other!
