Question Headers and the rest of the exhaust system

Hey I'm thinking about putting a new exhaust system into my 88 GXL, everything stock has been on there for all the 98k miles and I was wondering if you guys could recommend a decent company/kit or whatever that sells the whole deal, from headers to the mufflers. I wanna keep it all street legal (and the price down) and I'm not looking for huge performance increase, also muffler thats close to whats on there stock, I don't want giant ricer crap. Basically something a little better than the stock stuff. thanks

edit: my title is true, it does leak hehe

Racing Beat........ Or you can save your cats and mufflers and do something illegal till next inspection time and just put them back on... But racing beat offers good stuff and so does corksport.

Uh..... YES !!! lol ... one of the first things people normally do for mods is your exhaust you have a good power potentional from just letting that thing breathe.

I have replaced the exhaust ( '91 vert) from header to tail pipe with a Bonez dual cat that is less restrictive than stock and a Racing beat CAT-Back system-which is totally legal here in California. I also used a Bonez intake-which is illeagal but can be switched back to stock intake in about 10 minutes. all three mods adds about 20 hp above 5,000 RPM, sounds awsome(not crazy loud-just free breathing) and my mileage improved 1-2 mpg to 17mpg. But it's not cheap!($1000)

definately ditch the cats if you're willing to swap exhausts for smogging. mine feels like i left the handbrake on with the cats in there.

If you switch to a racing beat header you can no longer pass smog right?

Even if you passed visual inspection, it wouldn't pass the emission tests... with RB header/ and their CAT back exaust?

Being in CA and all, its pretty hard to get those exaust upgrades without switching every two years.

What is it that makes headers illegals, I thought as long as you have a decent catalytic converter its all good?
You guys in Cali have much worse emissions restrictions than we do on the east coast, right

Yeah its horrable around here, I just picked up a TII from a guy in oregon and well its just barely not passing emissions, so im hunting around for that problem and everything is stock! If you were to heat up the car real good, lets say hook it to the old machine, (how I was testing it for free heh) and then hold the revs at 3k for a min or two it would pass, but if you let the car idle for a good 5 min, then go to do the test it will fail.

But its also leaking as from the FPD so I am taking care of that before I even take it to be smogged....

It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to make CA such a restrictive area, when everyone else in the states/world are not doing the same thing, and chances are their cars are making up for the fact that we have it so restrictive... oh well, its all debateable.

i have a racing beat cat back and a bonez high flow cat and presilencer...i love it but im gonna got with the RB header and silencer combo soon'

i am from laguna beach calif....but i am on the east coast cuz i am in the air force.....here in north carolina they just look to see if emissions stuff is intact...most non mazda mechanics around here see a rotary pull up for the yearly inspection(visual only) and they dont even pop the hood......for pre 1996 vehicles in NC its only a visual saftey/emissions inspection...

actualy making the exhaust freer flowing will give you better gas milage. same diffrence as a less restrictive air filter.
