Hatch Weight

For those with track cars who are interested...

I had to build a lexan hatch for a customer and was quite surprised when I did the weigh in at the end.

Stock wiperless hatch - 51lbs
Lexan Hatch - 30lbs

The hatch with a wiper would certainly be more, but I didn't weigh one so you're on your own there

The hatch frame was left alone, I simply cut out the window riveted in the lexan (after painting a black frite around the lexan) and butyl sealant was used on the inside. As well, some of the inside trim was re-installed on the frame (not much, but maybe 1 pound)

You could go further by hole-sawing some holes in the frame itself, and by omitting ALL sealant if it were a true race car, but this guy wanted to keep any moisture out if possible.

But there's an easy 20lbs for all you diet lovers out there

You can lose another 16 lbs if you have a fiberglass hatch frame but it wouldn't be good on a street car. If anybody wants one PM me I make them.

This thread is useless without installed pics? Hehe...

It does look good though. I wasn't sure on how the curve would look, but it seems to be nice.
