hard start and idle

I've been looking around for a while but I haven't really found what might cause this

It takes a while to start my car (86 gxl) on cold start, it cranks for a few seconds, sometimes for like 5 seconds or so till it starts... it always do but it takes a while, if I try to start it when it's hot, it'll be quick

Also, my idle is weird on cold start sometime, I don't think it's the AWS as this goes to 3k right? im not sure
When it start, it goes to about 2k rpm, and it slowly goes to 750 as it get hotter but when it idles between 1300 and 1500, it keep moving up and down +/- 300rpm
once it gets a little hotter, it stops doing that and end up at 750rpm idle

Thanks for any help!

It's the thermowax, the rev's go down after it warms up. I'm having a cold start issue myself as well. I am as of right now attributing it to a bad thermosensor, that's what the idiot box is telling me anyway. Got a new one though. Haven't plugged it in yet. Could also be the OMP gone bad, but unless yours is an s5, they rarely fail.

check your water themosensor as well.... that was giving me cold start issues. These sensors rarely fail, but the conncetors can get a little shaky. When the connection is bad or the sensor goes bad the ECU automatically "guesses" that the water temps are higher than they are on an outright cold start and gives the engine less gas making it harder to start. Your idle problem isn't really a problem, just the car warming up. As long as it floats at 750rpm at operating temp. I wouldn't be that worried about a rotary's idle when its getting warm.

Thanks, I'll check it out tomorow, I'm not sure where to look at for the water thermosensor, but from what I found it is behind the water pump right? on a s4 gxl
And if it's only the connection that is bad, by cleaning it, could it be fixed?

I'm not sure on s4's but yes, it should be behind the water pump housing under the alternator. Cleaning it may or may not work, check the two pins that actually go into the sensor. Often times one of those pins is "pushed" back into the connector messing things up. If cleaning it doesn't help or the pins are good, I don't know what to tell ya other than test the sensor with a multimeter spec to the FSM and see if it's good, if the sensor reads good, then go to the ECU with the multimeter and check where that wire goes in..... I'm not sure what pin it is on s4 ECU's, check the FSM again, if it isn't spec than the connector is bad or you've got a short in the wire.
