Unhappy Haltech'd J-Spec is a No-Go

Hey...
I just finished putting in a J-Spec along with a Haltech E6K computer and I am having some problems unfortunately...

The motor seems to have (at best) a stuck seal on the front rotor. I looked through the spark plug holes and I can see all 6 apex seals, so I know that at least they didn't fail. The car will start (albeit VERY reluctantly) when I use a bunch of starting fluid, but it dies pretty quickly after that and is very rough when it runs for those few seconds. Is there any good way to check whether fuel is being injected into the engine? -- The fuel pump turns on when you turn the key to the 'run' position, so I don't think it's the pump. Also, what are the chances that the seal is just stuck? Is it even worth monkeying around with the motor, or should I just try to get another one instead?

Man... I just want to drive my car I've had it since August and was hoping to be driving it soon, but things don't look good...

Thanks,
Manolis

Might wanna try this in the ECU forum, or try the HaltechSupport Yahoo listserv, at groups.yahoo.com .

I'm sure it's probably just a map, fuel/timming isue. I had problems getting my friends to run too. were did you get the map from? which way did you put the CAS in?

how old are the plugs?

Do a compression check if you want to blame the engine.
What kinda map are you running?&nbsp ALL of the base maps I've seen are way too rich - you need to adjust them to suit your needs.

Scott 89t2: I downloaded the Map from Matt's site (www.hitman.hm). It's the map for a stock 13BT with a 3 Bar MAP sensor, etc...

I switched the fuel lines around yesterday, but that didn't do it, so I put 'em back the way they were. The "Disable Injector Outputs" option is set to "NO", so I don't think that's the problem.

As far as timing goes, I lined up the yellow mark with the pointer, then inserted the CAS so the two 'pointers' were aimed at the mounting holes (per the Hitman's instructions).

RETed:
If the map was too rich, wouldn't I smell fuel coming out of the exhaust? I'm trying to start this thing without any exhaust on it at all actually, so I think that if anything was coming out that I'd be able to smell it.

I checked spark, is there any good way to check for fuel besides pulling the Primary Fuel Rail and cranking it to watch the injectors?

Thanks!,
Manolis

even if it's too rich it should still start. it just won't run very well. but you should be smelling fuel, or it should be covering your plugs.

cas is fine. I was just asking cause when we did it. the first time the CAS was inserting using mazda instrutions, but with the hitmans map so it didn't work.

when you changed your fuel lines around did they spray everywhere? was there pressure? what kind of reg are you using? stock?

Yeah, I'm using the stock FPR. When I changed the Lines out they didn't spray everywhere, but there was a bit of gas that spurted out when I pulled the lines off for the first time (from the correct position). I just pulled the primary fuel rail off and there was a bunch of gas in there. The injectors seem to be OK (ie no obvious damage)...

I'm thinking about bringing some friends over and tow-starting it when I'm done putting in the fluids and getting tires for the car...

No - easiest way to tell is to pull the spark plugs.&nbsp If they are sooty black, then you're running rich.

The Hitman's base maps are all too rich - some of them are off by 100% in certain sections.&nbsp It's a BASE map - it needs to be adjusted for your applications; don't assume base maps will be even close to being tuned for your car...

Ahha!

I think I've got it figured out -- i'm going to check the wiring on the Haltech this evening when I get home. I think I may have blown the injector fuse (dammit, why didn't I think of that before...)

I'll get back to you guys on it!

Thanks,
Manolis
