Haltech wiring harness toast, problem solved.

Well my car should have been on the road in a couple of weeks, after being down for about a year, doing the whole t2 conversion, but no.
I finally hooked up my battery in the rear of my car, and all of a sudden there was smoke everywhere, I freak out and unplugged the battery real quick. I did not have my haltech plugged in, as mentioned in the manual, but I was still pissed and confused. I had done everything right, even soldered and shrink wrapped every connection, being the perfectist I am when it comes to the car.
After a testing and ripping the fried harness apart, I figured out the relays I was sold were miswired/improperply fuctioning, when I turned the power on the relay not only switched on w/o a +12v ign switched source, but sent power also to the ground wire. The ground wire overloaded, as it is only meant to handle the circuit from the +12v ign switched source. So that single wire fried, but it fried all the wires it was touching in the wrapped up wiring loom. I am still waiting on response back from Haltech, as Rotormotorsports, the company I bought it from is out of business. I am just relieved that I did not screw up, and it is undeniably not my fault.

I might try and rewire it tomorrow, but If I can get a new harness out of them I will use that, but I emailed them 5 times in the last week and no response. And no one likes to claim responsiblity for anything....

Not only will i be getting new relays, but testing them and throwing fuses on all the power wires on the battery and the grounds.

I hate to say this: suck it up and buy a new flying lead, they are only ~120 or so. Your catastrophie is axactly why; whenn performing wiring work I remove all fuses and power the vehivle up system by system by inserting fuses and testing.

It you do repair that harness I would recommend utilizing TEFZEL Milspec wire.

oh really, thats all. Yea I will probably just buy a new one if its that cheap.. Yea I wasn't smart enough to power it up outside the car.... I will be doing that next time... But I am really not mechanically inclined when it comes to wiring/electrical stuff, I am young, I have learned my lesson...

Wasn't picking on you, just trying to help you learn from my mistakes. Just be methodical in your installation and all will go well.

The main benefit of Tefzel is its high heat tolerance and the lack of toxic smoke when it burns. I am using it in my TII Emission harnes that I am RE-fabricating

What size fuse should I throw on that ground wire when I reassemble it? The wire is only a 16awg...

NEVER fuse a ground wire!!!! Just make sure it is clean and has good contact. When hooking up power supplies (ie Batteries) always connect the negative first.
