Haltech and stock speedo gear

I have an 87 non-tubo and am going to running haltech with a digital dash. I know the speedo is cable driven but is there any way to modify the speedo gear so that haltech can receive an analog pulse that it can interpret as speed?

I think I've heard of people modifying them for other cars, anyone know of any write ups?

While searching I found this but nothing about using a hall effect or inductive sensor.

I'm thinking of taking the speedo gear down to the local machine shop and and seeing what they can do.

I'm pretty sure my car doesn't have ABS so I can't tap into that system.

Is there an easy way to add an ABS ring gear and sensor?

Could I possibly use an electronic speedo gear off a newer car such as a rx8 or miata?

The FC cluster outputs a pulsed VSS for the power steering and cruise control. I believe it's a GN/RD wire which can be tagged under the drivers side dash where the cruise module is/would be.

To be fair, I haven't gotten this working with my Adaptronic, but I know others have gotten it working on Megasquirt. There is a thread detailing all of this.

the stock system is trans-> speedo gear thingee-> cable-> speedo-> vss output to ps and cruise control

if you want to ditch the cable the FD speedo drive is just the VSS. it'll go right into a turbo trans, and should work with the NA also.

someone, like dakota digital probably also makes a box that outputs a VSS from the cable as well

Bolts right in to a NA trans as well.

Sweet thanks guys that's what I needed! I'll grab a speedo gear off an FD.

I am ditching the stock cluster and I am going to use a tablet. Haltech has a OBD2 adapter that I can use for aftermarket Dash cluster apps like torque pro.

Thanks again everyone!

Well, I've been looking and I can't seem to find an electronic speedo gear from an FD. Does anyone know where I can source one of these? Would one off a miata work too?

Maybe this is also an option:

This is an adapter that you screw into the stock speedo drive where the cable normally goes.

Do you have a link to said thread?

I would like to maintain my factory cluster but have the speed readable by my Adaptronic.

Since this thread, I did get a cluster on my bench and learned there needs to be a pull-up present. Adaptronic VSS input configured as digital input will provide the pull-up.
