Haltech or no

Well, since i recently had my newest modification installed a few days ago (broken glass on the drivers seat and floor) the insurance just can't wait to dish out some good cash. With this newly aquired cash, should i get the AFC and boost controller I had before or just go for a haltech?? I have larger injectors installed.... S5 turbo and my engine is ported and polished... i definitely plan to do much more in the future so what's your opinions?

Is this car a daily driven car or the ocasional weekend use? I would not recommend a Haltech for daily use. I know its all in the tuning but I sure as hell wouldn't want to drive my car everyday.

You would still want to get a boost controller. Unless for some reason the boost control function on the E11 is alot better.

Ouch, someone stole your SAFC? What a goober.

Aaron, Haltech is probably going to be your best bet, as you're looking to make large amounts of power soon anyways. The flexibility that comes with that system exceeds a SAFC's capabilities by far. Anyways, I'm sorry to hear that your TII was defaced, perhaps I can help you out this Sunday with cleaning the glass out. Plus ya gotta see my new car, an 88 Mazda 626 Turbo.

Yeah... just refer to the thread "someone must die" for info. If you'd like to help me install a haltech then we need to do it SOON (i might just buy a used s-afc to use til i get the haltech in) cause my car won't run right now (720cc primaries with no fuel computer = suck ***). As soon as i get my insurance check I'll make sure I hop online and order it. What are all these options im being given anyways? Connector kit... fully termed... main connectors blah blah....

Hmm, just get a used SAFC until you decide to go Haltech, then you can just sell the SAFC to me.

Here's my take on it -

Installing and tuning a Haltech is a LOT more work than you think it is. 90% of the people that will tell you to get a Haltech have never even seen a Haltech in real life.

The Super-AFC with large injectors is a *great* way to make lots of easy, safe, reliable power. If you still have a stock turbo, there's no reason at all to go to a Haltech - you've just spent a ton of money and invested a TON of work when a $300 Super-AFC can do the job great.

Be *realistic* about your goals and your finances. This is the hardest thing a lot of people have to face. Have you ever noticed that EVERYONE seems to want a 400+hp FC that handles like it's on rails? Guess how many people actually have it? Very few. It takes a LOT of money, time, and knowledge to make it there. If you can only devote $100 a month to the car, you're not getting a big turbo any time soon!

Anyhow, just some sage advice. Haltech's are great, but they take some SERIOUS work to install and tune properly. That's why I'm so excited about the E-manage - I want to prove you can run a big turbo with great driveability and reliability without a Haltech. Now if I can just get the car back in one piece....

Nicely said, no one usually takes my advise and I've been through about everything.

Dale: I pretty much agree with what you just said. We just ordered a haltech for our stock 7 though. Of course, this month gave it a 3k budget, we'll see what next month gives it... basically the wiring on this car is So ghetto rigged I have to rewire the engine bay anyways and a EMS will be a good idea from our perspective based on the planned (and already funded for) mods.

I've played with an e6k before (and some other EMS') and tuning it certainly isn't as easy as a S-AFC, but

Dale: you still ***** out on IRC?

Ok, here's the thing... I DO have the money (and will have more) to put into my 7... Where I'm working right now (valet at newport on the levee) I'm making anywhere from 80-150 a night in tips + 5.25 an hour. Come this winter I start co-op ($20+/hr) After taxes and tuition I should have about 3000/ co-op quarter to use at my discretion.... so i think my goals are pretty realistic... For now, I believe an S-AFC would suffice quite well... I can use the extra money for a nice boost controller and perhaps some aesthetics considering all i've done so far is enginework.... im thinking about gettings some sweet stickers... i heard they can add like 50-100 hp; is that right??? j/k

microtech

microtech lt-8 is the crap and sells for about half. Its laptop software is very easy to use and it is very accurate. The new lt-8 has ignition/ fuel and has a map for the gap between leading/trailing firing. Very popular in australian rx-7/rotary vehicles. I installed mine a couple weeks ago, its going to dynod very shortly...so far its a great system. The new lt-8 also gives pretty decent daily driving...but with any standalone as 1fastTII said, when you devote that much time and money with your car and a standalone, you don't want to drive it everyday.

Thats why I got a miata!!!!!

I think you're on the right path - go slow, do things one at a time, and learn the car more as you go along. Don't forget a good complement of gauges!
