Grinding 1-2
More frequently than not, under high RPMs, my 1-2 shift is grinding. I drive a '86 base model. Is this a clutch problem or an internal tranny problem (synchros...)? I am planning on changing the fluid to redline... What kind should I get? Would a bushing rebuild kit do anything for this? I don't think I am low on clutch fluid, but I am first asking if anyone here has had any problems like this before--...
Let me know.

If it's not grinding in all the rest of the gears than i'd say there isn't a problem with the clutch. Looks like your on your way to a tranny rebuild soon. You could try Redline MT-? tranny fluid to see if it helps at all.
Sounds like a synchro problem to me. If it were just gears, you would get grinding at any speed. Try some good synthetic tranny oil and see if that helps. If not, a newbuild/rebuild is in your future. Good luck!
I covered this just recently - is the search disabled?
The stock gear ratios between 1st and 2nd are too wide for REDLINE shifting.  Either short-shift at a lower RPM or WAIT a split second for the synchros to do their job.
No amount of synthetic fluid is going to "fix" this "problem."

It happens in reverse as well at a standing stop. I figured it wasn't a clutch problem...
What can be done during a rebuild to prevent this problem from occuring again? Would I be better off searching for a Turbo II tranny? Does anyone sell rebuilt units with a core exchange?
Thanks for the prompt replies, guys.

i'd try to change the fluid first, and then the bushings (mine are bad and it does the same thing) it wouldn't be related to the syncros unless it's all the time not just under hard acceleration also have you tried matching the rpms? if it's hard to match then it might be the syncro's i just would try the basics first to eliminate them then think about pulling the tranny since that's alot of work for something that might not be broken.

Lol... I sometimes HAVE to put it in 1st then reverse-- I never "force" anything in. Sometimes it glides in, but with a grind. RETed, have you done the bushing kit procedure? If you did, did it help?
What about a short-shift kit? Does that come with new bushings, etc?

Infini: No I haven't heard of that (BG Syncro). What is it? If it's effective, I'll need to look into it. I love the track, and I need my "mad quick shifts!"
RETed- no one in my city stocks MT-90. Do you (or anyone) know where I can order it online (cheap)?

Redline is better, the DSM crowd is generally a bunch of sheep though, so thats why they use BG like its magic and refuse to hear anything else.
Redline will help if you syncros are starting to wear, and if you'r not shifting too high.
The reverse gear does that one most trannies. You have to put it in anouther gear to stop the tranny from spinning.
