Got Mice?

Hello All,

I'm thinking of buying a first or second gen. RX-7. I know some of the second generation have the motorized "mice" for the shoulder belts. What years don't have them? I can't stand that seatbelt design in any car, but do believe in seatbelt use.

Thanks!

Often called Mouse belts, but I think that was before you were born node.

The 89-91 US spec non-vert models had them. They can be easily replaced/converted to stationary belts with belts and interior trim panels from a 86-88 model or from the 86-91 Canadian models (which never had them).

Yeah, I remember that's one of the reasons I didn't get this 1989 Turbo II was looking at. That and it had 150,000 original miles on it.

Hey, what was up with the mouse belt craze in the late 80's to early 90's? Almost every import car had them...then the idea went away very quickly.

And that is an exact quote from a large japanese car manufacturers president

It was because the fed mandated SRS systems. Too many morons didn't use seat belts. So the feds said we have to protect you from yourself and mandated airbags or belts that didn't require user intervention.

It was easier and cheaper to use mouse belts than airbags until airbags became much cheaper due to mass production.

personally I hate both... and blame the american consumer for forcing me to buy a car with an explosive device 2.5 feet from my face, or a car that belts me in.

I replaced the belts on my 91 coupe that I just sold, with non-mouse belts. The guy that bought the car thought that was great.

Thumbs down

exactky how long is it to convert because they are a pain. plus if you have them, there isn't a gauge pod you could use in the A-pillar because it's a different size. Which is also another pain. Too many of those with my 89

Nah if they were squirrels they would die as often, and they would have bigger guts.

fastrotaries took me about an hour each while drinking beer... the older belts drop right in. The all the bolt holes are even there.

Drops off a good 15 lbs off the car too.

I'm no fool - I had a '91 N/A with 'em and sold it. They were so annoying that I bought a '90 TII with the same belt system!

Seriously, I've gotten used to them but on rare occasion sometimes I''ll open the door to get out, then realize I still have my lap belt on...

Also, the "86-92" Autometer guage pod doesn't fit these a-pillars.
Grrr.

88-91 convertibles don't have the automatic seatbelts, but they're slow.

Actually Node, 4 point harnesses are not legal for use on the street. It's odd, I know. The reason is the governing body for 4/5/6 point belts is SFI which makes sure they are safe for racing. In order for them to be road legal they need to be DOT approved, which I've yet to see.

I have gotten pulled over before with my 4 points on and the cop didn't give me any hassle, but then again I live in the sticks. He did look at me really weird though... Luckily it wasn't for speeding... I don't think you're ever going to get out of a speeding ticket if you're wearing a 4 point harness.

Hey i don't mind them at all. Its the only time I wear my seatbelt They aren't tight on you and cops won't give you a ticket with those. My 7 doesn't have them but the 90 camry I am stuck with for now does.
