Mice, I hate them....
Been dealing with a bad smell on my car - was stored for last 2 years in a barn with a concrete floor (pole barn). Didn't get to drive it last year, finally back in running condition! But had this nasty smell.
Well good news - it wasn't in the car, bad news - it is a pain to get to... It is right above the fan motor - thankfully there is a screen there (above the blower fan) that kept the damn things out of the interior. However, it is a real pain to get there to clean the mess. Not sure if there are dead mice there or if it is just the urinated nest. Damn i hate mice - may have to take off fender just to get to this mess...

Dealing with rodent droppings, always wear a dust mask & gloves. They can carry hantavirus:

...Humans may be infected with hantaviruses through rodent bites, urine, saliva or contact with rodent waste products. Some hantaviruses cause potentially fatal diseases in humans, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), but others have not been associated with human disease. Human infections of hantaviruses have almost entirely been linked to human contact with rodent excrement...

Nest was on passenger side so wiper rack stayed in but did have to bend a panel (hidden in that cowl area and it keeps leaves out of fan inlet). All cleaned out now but I don't think I will ever get over that smell. Make sure you put your car into air recycle mode (vs fresh) when you store. That provides one more level of protection for these damn things in case the screen at the inlet of the blower assembly is ajar or missing.
Clorox cleaner sprayed and no smell now... Lots of wipes (with gloves).
