got lsd for free
i got an "lsd" for free yesterday, from a s4, i was told it was limited slip diff, but i dont know for sure that it is. is there anyway to tell if it is really an lsd? i know i could open it up and look but i kinda want to avoid that, although it might be fun

It's missing the tag that came on all of the limited-slip differentials, so it's pretty hard to tell without splitting it or installing it in a car (though you could always try seeing how difficult it is to spin the two outputs in the opposite direction, if it goes easily it's an open diff, if there's some serious force required it's a limited-slip usually)

lol, if it is a limited slip diff then that was a wicked deal, even if it isnt still a wicked deal!! Just letting you know that putting in a LSD is a nother story its a real SOB to take out the old and put in new if you dont have a proper car lift and or a few friends to help, definatley and all day event!

it shouldn't lock up when turning the outputs, they should both spin the same direction and have some amount of load on them but definitely not locking up. try spinning the pinion yoke (driveshaft flange) and make sure both axle flanges spin the same direction, if you hold one side it should be impossible to turn the pinion yoke by hand without the differential trying to turn over like a turtle on it's back.

easiest way to find you is turn one side of it to the right or to the left if you turn it to the right and the other side turns the same way its LSD if it turns the opposite way its an open diff....

I know that when I spin one tire the other spins the opposite. But I notice that on let say my dads truck, when im in grass or sand w.e. and the the tire spins, only one does it, but my car both tires spin when either burn out or launches. i know that lsd wasnt given as an option on the verts, but if it does get the power to the ground then Its the same to me...

alright if anyoneone still cares, i just jacked up my s5 n/a with open diff and spun the rear driversside tire, and only that wheel that i spun moved, but i did notice that the other tire(passenger side) would move in the oppisite direction only a LITLE!, so this helped me clarify that my car currently have as a open diff
were as the differential i got the other day wen spinning 1 of the outputs both would move in the same direction..
so i got a free lsd!
sorry for this dumb thread but im new to the lsd
so can anyone tell me if this lsd needs a rebuild, or some other valuable knowledge they would like to share about lsd's
thanks for all the input everyone
