Going to look at an 88 GXL saturday!

Well, I've been stuck with a 1973 Opel GT for the past 10 months. And while it's a cool car, it's drawn out its welcome. I needed something more modern (but still cheap, for the time being).

Back when I was in college, I had an 88 GXL, and loved that car more than anything.

Welp, now I have a chance to get another one. Just hoping for some pointers.

It's an 88 GXL (as I mentioned) with about 112k on the clock. Body and interior look to be in great shape (from pics) and the center console isn't even cracked.

Like my old one, the drivers door handle is busted, the antenna is busted, and it currently has no battery.

He's asking $3,000. I'm going to jump the car to start it and make sure all seems well, but I'm wondering if anyone could list some specific things to look for (problems), and what kind of price I should offer him (I'm thinking $2,300). Thanks for the help!

(damn, I can't wait to get back into a rotary!)

$3000 is waaaaay too much in my opinion.

Here is the link to the sticky on the top of the page:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=181219

read it and youll get a good idea about what to look for. Also read aaroncakes website to know what to look for and avoid.

To give you a comparison I paid $3800 for a 91 NA with 73k on the original engine.

if the car is in very good shape, and motor is strong, it is worth to go from $2300. you know, it is hard to find a 88 rx7 in good shape. most of them are already beat up. and also, depend on where you live. sometimes, some area has higher demand than anywhere else.

Bingo... Good point. I'm looking at 'fair' condition TIIs in the F/S and wanted section for no less the $4k... by all means, tell me where to find a good condition TII for $3k and I'll buy it right now!

Ok, so I went to look at it.

Aside from the problems he told me about, also... The sunroof needed assistance opening. The wiper switch barely works. There is a small hole in the exhaust Y-pipe.

Otherwise, the body and interior are in near perfect condition.

Now, here's the kicker. It would barely run. The battery was dead and wouldn't hold a charge at all. We jumped it, and the only way it would stay running was if I kept my foot on the gas. It didn't run up to 3,000RPM upon starting, either.

I revved it, dropped the gas, no colored smoke. It did sound like it was "missing" in terms of firing, when listening to the exhaust.

So what I'm wondering... Would a new battery and tuneup likely fix those problems? I realize that a totally dead battery could drain the electrical system, thus causing those problems. Also, plugs and gasoline that have sat for two years wouldn't be too beneficial towards the running condition.

So I was thinking of offering the guy $1,500 take it or leave it. Thoughts?

1500 is a decent price in the interior/exterior is really near perfect. the car sitting for 2 years is bad. and keep in mind you will probably be doing the run around for a while trying to get it to run like it should.

i paid 1800 for my 89 GTU with a slightly damaged fender/door and 15,000miles on a rebuild. but i feel i got a pretty good deal.
