That sucks you have E-Check in your county of Ohio. You should move to Columbus in Franklin Country. No E-Check, tons of RX-7's, and plus I wouldn't be the only girl in Columbus who is into RX-7s.

And welcome!

a bit louder its a hell of a lot louder I have a 3" from turbo to the Y - the Y back is 2 and 3/4 " with 2 x 5" tailpipes.
I cannot see why N/A would be louder when i come on boost its ****** loud as hell you can hear me coming for miles.

When you go with a straight pipe you can cut the original cat above the seams and then wrap the carcass around the straight pipe and weld it back together. As long as the welds aren't visible from the side you're good to go for all but a sniffer test. I did this with a couple other cars and my initial open system on the 7. Eclipse cats are a good substitute as they have a nice riveted on heat shield than can be drilled out and bolted on to cover the welds.

If u go to Rx7.com they sell a straight pipe that goes from the exhaust manifold to the Ypipe, replaces all the cats, it 160 and is pretty easy to install. I have it on my car and it doesnt make it much louder but flow very nicely.

Cat replacement pipes don't flow for **** compared to a header... The fact that they're quieter is proof of that. The two exhaust pulses are bouncing off eachother in the exhaust manifold rather than being used to create scavenging in the chambers.

Gutted cats really arent that loud with stock or rotary intended mufflers. When you get the straight through stuff it gets mind numbing and piggy beconing.

Sorry, but I've got to call BS on that. My '87 NA has 3 glasspacks, one acting like a presilencer and two on the ends and they haven't died yet. Depends on which you get, the cheap ones will last a couple months, a decent quality will last a lot longer (though, they DO break apart a HELL of a lot sooner, just not nearly as quick as anyone says)

If your really worried about the police finding out that you have no catalitic converter. Take the old one cut it in half and find someone that will weld it onto your straight pipe. You won't have to worry about the police and it will give you time to have another one made for the e check in ohio.

there is absolutley nothing wrong with gutting your cat. I did after swaping engines on my 86 base model. (had to cuz when the old one went out it took the cats with it) but aftwerwards i was able to KEEP UP not pass but KEEP UP with a slightly modded TII. Granted I had a 90 engine block but still. good power and it doesnt soud too increadibly bad. kinda mean.

I think this thread no longer concerns the girl who started it. It is now just a gutted exhaust conversation. As for gutting cats, don't do it. Keep the cats, get a new exhaust with a header, pre silencer, and decent mufflers. Then when you have to go pass emissions, you have a stock exhaust you can bolt back on.
