getting *no* compression on a j-spec

I got a j-spec engine recently and am trying to run the sucker now. Only problem is, it doesn't seem to be getting ANY compression at all. I tried a compression tester in the lower plugs of both rotors and watched it, nothing. HOWERVER.. this engine WAS compression tested before it was shipped to me. Is it possible that the ATF trick would completely solve this problem? I'm getting really really really really really pissed off right now, becuase I've spent a lot of friggin' hours getting this swap done, and if this mother doesn't run, I'm going to make some heads roll.

well that sounds promising.. *(%#ing bastards, I hate this.. I'm NEVER doing this again.. I'm paying some bastard to pull the engine, rebuild/port it, and reinstall/tune it from now on.

ha HA!! um..... fah... Q.

Some of you will catch that later..

Anyhow, so what's the consensus here, think the ATF will work, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I just put it in at about 6:00 EDT, will there be any real problems with trying it tomorrow around noon, or should I REALLY wait those extra 6 hours? I'd like to get this bastard going ASAP, it's been pissing me off long enough.

if you have no compression, I doubt the atf trick is going to do anything. So who sold you this compression tested j-spec?

My friend revived a junkyard engine by squirting some motor oil thru the leading plug hole. He got it on all 3 faces of the rotor and cranked the engine right away. The engine regained compression and ran like new. Perfect compression all around.

I would really like to know whare you got it from. I wouldn't trust a motor that suddenly got it's compression back from puting some fluid into it. I would return that motor asap so your warrenty doesn't expire

Well, I feel for you, but let this be a lesson for the rest of you, test the engine BEFORE you install it.

Ugh, that would seriously suck.

did you buy the engine on ebay? If so, compression test means nothing on there. SR20DET guys can tell you that!

When they say the engine is "compression tested", it doesn't mean it has compression. It just means that compression test was performed, not that it passed the compression test.

Looks like you ripped!

Oh well, let that be a lesson for us.

Even if you used the ATF trick, it might raise the compression slightly, enough for it to run. the trick would not raise the compression back to stock spec.

I had a good experience installing a Jspec engine in my FD. I got my engine with a guarantee to start from a Jspec engine distributor in California. His name is Derek and he's been pretty good with jspec rotaries (13BREW and 20B).

Your buddy who "solved the compression loss" with ATF may have tested the compression incorrectly. If you have no compression due to seal failure, ATF MAY help get the engine started for a brief period of time. That brief period of time is dependent on seal damage (completely broken versus seal wear).

Take the car to a reputable rotary mechanic if you're still having trouble.

Make sure you contact jspec engine seller and work out some sort of reimbursement. Note: don't go off angry on the seller or you might get nothing out of the seller.

Good luck!

I got it from Midwest Engine in Cleveland. I'm from there, and they do lots of all kinds of engines, Ima have to call 'em if this doesn't work out, we'll see.

And I saw the compression test it had before, it loooked good

no, I took the compression tester and finger tightened it into the old motor on the "good" rotor and spun it by hand, and the sucker blew 30 psi just spinning it by hand.

Besides, I put the plugs in it and it didn't want to stop when I spun it by hand, but the old motor (with one good rotor) wanted to stop a lot more than the "new good" motor.
