Get a fire extinguisher today
I created a fire today on my turboII while trying to identify where my fuel leak was. It seemed to be the body of the front primary injector. I had the top of the engine apart and the rail pressurized. I was poking around with a screwdriver an made a spark(electrical). The gas caught fire. Not a small fire. Did my Three Stooges routine and finally put it out. The extinguisher when finally put into aciton took about a nano second to put the fire out.
Keep one handy. I thought I was bullet proof. Was not. Just amazing how quick the fire can be extinguished, once the fool operator finaly pushes the button. Gotta pust that button.

Good save man, what’s the damage?
I’ve carried an extinguisher for quite a few years, ever since the replacement of premium leaded petrol with premium unleaded "coincided" with a nasty spate of underbonnet fires around the country caused by rotted rubber fuel system components. The petrol companies said there was no link, but paid out anyway...
I’m considering buying a second after hearing a scary story. A guy successfully put out an underbonnet fire by emptying his extinguisher onto it. Problem was the fuel was still leaking from the cracked hose, and the engine was still hot. When it reignited half a minute later all he could do was stand there holding his empty extinguisher, watching it burn, baby, burn...

Opinions are like........
Fire extinguisher is mandatory. Buy two and practice with one. You'd be surprised by the number of people who fumble. I used to practice with mom's cooking. All it took was one phone call and the kitchen was smoking.
No serious damage to your car, right?

What? Me panic? Wish someone had filmed the event. Classic.

Unfortunately, I have been on the other side of this story. I did an engine swap on my 88 GXL to cure a blown apex seal. The swap went fine with very few snags. I went to the store to get the last thing i needed (Brake Fluid) . Upon returning to my house, I found that my friend had tried to start the car. There was no piping after the exhaust manifold! It shot a fireball out onto the built up oil and gas on the chassis. WHOOOOM!!! the whole damn thing went up for about 30 seconds. The damage was pretty devastating . All the oil and vaccum lines under the upper intake manifold had to be replced, A crushing blow. I did manage to fix it all with no problems though. Incidentally it was at my parents house where we had 3 fire extinguishers................ALL EMPTY!!. Be sure to check your extinguisher often.
