Gear Sets Worth It?

My transmission is going to be rebuilt soon and i was wondering if installing a different gear set would be worth it? Not many places that i've seen online sell gear sets for the FC except RHD Japan. I guess enlighten me if this is a dumb idea or not.

Depends on the demands you have on the transmission. Since you said it though, who's rebuilding it for you? I've had one hell of a time trying to tear down mine and I'm just #$*@%&^ done. I don't have enough special tools to do it. I already have a damned rebuild kit, cost me three hundred &*%^*#! bones...

No, not worth it..

Unless you are racing the car and the new gearing would suit your favorite track better. I most cases, it doesn't..

PineappleRacing will put Miata gears into your trans during a rebuild... $995+core [your RX-7 trans.]

I can imagine the car getting up to speed ridiculously faster with that set... Not sure how it'd affect fuel economy though..

but the n/a transmissions are still weak and prone to breaking even with moderate abuse.

not worth it IMO, if you want a better setup find a used TII transmission which you can flog, unfortunately there is no alternate gearing for the turbo transmissions like the miata gearsets.

there's also nothing wrong with the stock gearing in the n/a transmissions anyways, no one uses 5th gear on any course that i know of. or easier to find a modified rear ring and pinion for a higher gear ratio if you want quicker acceleration without all the BS of regearing the tranny.

dont know if that link worked but this is a close ratio gear kit made for the FD and FC tranys by os giken. expensive but i have heard nothing but good things about them! i plan on getting one in the near further.
if the link did not work you can go on google and type in os giken close ratio gear set for fc3s, it should pop up.

Thanks everyone for the information. Rob at Pineapple built my motor i will call him up about it. My concern like Derekcat said was fuel economy. I might not go through with this other than getting the transmission rebuilt. @Infosponge the link worked, thanks. Way to expensive though, more so than the kit on RHD Japan.

I'd take rotary mpg's over my trucks any day ever. I'm netting 8.4 at best.

But yeah, rotary + good mpg's = tuning + tuning + tuning + very controlled driving. You can net good mpg's, but you have to control the conditions a lot.

Daily Driver. B)

I've gotten 24MPG on a tank with the current engine [S5 rotors, S6 housings, SAFC2 -7% at cruise] and I'm sure it's actually doing better than that because there was city driving on that tank too..

Jerd >> Dang man.. That's like my friend's Suburban. >_< But even my Mom's Tundra isn't all that great: 18MPG freeway.. Easy to beat that with a bone stock FC..

I'd say the only trick is... Minimize city driving.. [though I admit with an all stock S4 engine I ran that SAFC at -15% for cruise and it was perfectly fine ]

Perhaps the Miata gearing would help quite a bit in the city?

a standalone is cheaper than a gear set which will still not fix your fuel economy.

Doing it right with your MPG's, a big factor is how you drive it. Most people can't help but dog an FC.

Yeah, it's rough on the wallet. It's a 84 F150 super cab with a 351 Windsor HO. I traded a Saturn to it, which got around 34 city and up to 42 highway. But I needed a big truck because I'm relocating soon, and a extended cab because I have a fatbaby on the way haha.

But back to OP, a standalone with a good economy tune can get you some really decent MPG's.

lugging a rotary engine doesn't increase mileage like a piston powered car with a flat torque curve. most of the time you use more fuel lugging these engines because of the lack of torque and the priming it takes for even minor throttle inputs.

best economy i get in my TII is cruising at about 3600RPMs @83MPH in 5th netting about 23mpg. wouldn't be doable without the standalone and trimming the fat from the engine bay/exhaust.

I meant more along the lines of most people pegging the tach every chance they get haha. No low end torque means it'll take more to get rolling, but shifting at 7k every chance possible is a step back too haha.

all these gearsets are for racing, so 1st is generally taller, and 5th is shorter, so it puts everything close together.

better for racing because the 7,000rpm shift doesn't drop to 4500rpm like the stock gearset does

All i meant was i don't need the MPG's to be lower than they necessarily have to. @Karack Power FC will be installed in the near future.

Talking of gas mileage, I get 23 miles/gallon with my 88 vert, and thats Canadian gallons, on ethanol blend. Some gas stations sell Premium gasoline, I'm going to try that, some one said that more BTUs=better fuel economy from premium gas.
What do Miatas get for fuel economy, not that I want one, too much of a girly car for me
Mike

I'd say Miatas get about 30-32, but I could be wrong.

Premium will get you zero additional MPGs on a rotary, all things being equal anyway. [as in, both tanks at the station are equally clean, fresh]... Not sure where you're getting 'more BTUs' but that's incorrect.. All you get is more octane [detonation resistance] and cleaning additives.

I thought Canadian gallons were US, you guys using Imperial Gallons?

Just like Jerd said, around 30MPG [my Dad's '90 base trim once got 34MPG even with a bunch of city driving..]

They're girly in appearance only ^_- [driving around town it feels faster than my 157 Wheel-HP base trim 87' NA, but that's really just because it has a bunch of torque off the line, they also handle as well as our cars..]
