There's no o'ring retainer(white teflon) on a 88. I'd skip the gasket and just use RTV on the front cover. Just don't cover the approx .040 size hole on the left side of the cover thats a passage for the metering oil pump.
Just being argumenative. In fun way. See mazdatrix.com and their FAQ for the rtv thing using no gasket.

I think you have to take off the water pump. Almost 90% sure. Attached is a jpg of sealant. Be sure you don't close off the approx .040 hole on the left side of the cover that interfaces with a .049 hole on the front housing. Use judgement on how much sealant to apply. Not too much, not too little. Just the right amount. I've had no failures yet.

the 86up cars all have the teflon thing and they need it too. i have seen an engine built without that o ring, and because it had about 15psi of oil pressure it was completely fucked on the inside

Sorry j9fd3S...I screwed the pooch on that teflon ring. Apologize..........whoa! Hold the horses. While writing the first sentence I stopped and clicked on the MAZDATRIX url...and read it. HUH? It says the 86-88 don't use the teflon. I went and looked at the front housing on a 87 out back in the shed and that housing does not, could not use the teflon with the oring. So I'll stick with my first post until someone can beat it into my head that you use a white teflon with the black oring in the center of it on a early model engine..
Don't get me wrong. A black oring is needed, never meant to imply one was not needed, but on the early front housings you can't use the white teflon with it.
I mean I've got the thing in front of me right now. Where I always get screwed, is I pay for a front cover gasket with the gasket set, but the front cover gasket won't fit a 86-88. The gasket area is all wrong for the oil passage. Not enough meat there. Using the rtv or silicone solves this problem. Sorry, I'm sticking with my story!
