Hi guys,

I just moved to Houston from San Jose last Dec. My avg gas mileage in Cali was 16.5 mpg for the previous year. Since moving to Houston, my gas mileage is now 19.5 mpg for the last 3 fill-ups since Jan. I have noticed I drive more on the freeway, but its only during rush hour traffic. Also, I am not babying it and the top was down most of the time. I take it past 7000rpms regularly. Just to test this current tank I was going to keep it below 3500rpms.

So, is Cali gas that much different that my MPG would drop that much for our Rx7s? My truck a '99 F150 still get about 17 mpg in Cali or Tx gas.

BTW, I got 23+ mpg on the drive from Cali in freezing weather.

 

not faamiliar with san Jose... is it flatter where you are now??

 

it's the hotter/ more humid weather- I get 24 or so in the winter and 26 or so in the summer here (50 miles north of Houston)

 

I got about 18mpg no matter what pretty much here in AZ with my NA.

I even did a top speed run after some late night speeding and I still got 18. Nothing more nothing less. Kinda weird.

I don't even know what my TII conversion will get now.

 

yeh, it's funny- the faster you go, on average, the better gas mileage you get...hmmm...

 

Gas formulations for CA result in lower HP and mileage (as well as emissions).

 

CA's emmissions sucks!! Florida emissions rocks!!

Yeah, I checked through the DEP database, CA fuels have additives that PA fuels don't and different aromatic contents.......

Its counter productive though.... Less emissions, but less mileage, so you have to burn more gas do go the same distance..... like cutting off the head to cure the headache.

 

I seem to get better gas mileage on gas from Ohio than I do from Michigan.. weird.

From what I understand the octane rating is lower in California compared to other states? Wouldn't this have a big effect on your gas mileage?

 

91 RON is the highest, with 89 RON and 87 RON the middle and low grades (respectively) in CA.

Non turbos generally get better mileage and power on the lowest (87 RON).

 

San Jose is pretty much as flat as Houston. The only time you get hills if you go to the sides of the Silicon Valley.

Also I only use 87 gas. If you also notice my original post, I also drive a '99 F150 v6. Its mileage did not change on the move.

My question was does it matter that much for Rotories on the formulation of gas that is put in?

 

The only thing I've notice is cheap gas (walmart, costco) kills my fuel economy & power.

I'm getting 19/24 in Atlanta and that's with a freeflowing exhaust without retuning for power.
