Gas mileage in the crapper....

Can someone please help me! I had to take the pre-cats and cat out because they were causing the engine not to be able to breath... now they are gone and I am literally getting 7mpg... I was getting like 20...

The pre-cats and cat can't possibly be boosting mileage that much...

Any ideas?

Is that all you did?

Sounds like you messed something up in some other way. Knocked a sensor loose, out of adjustment... etc...

The car was very slugish...had no power... thought it was the pre-cats... had the local shop take them out put in a pipe... come to find out the cat was also toast...cut that out...now its just a staight exhaust into two mufflers...and gas mileage SUCKS!

I havn't touched anything under the hood... I will say... when they had the exhaust flange off.... the inside was white as a sheet.... I guess I kinda brushed this off as normal because of the heat these engines generate...... yes no?

Maybe somthing happend to your O2 sensor and your engine is running in open loop all the time. That should turn the check engine light on, but thats a start. You could probably disconnect your O2 sensor and see if theres any change...

im not sure what your question is, is it running better or worse now? you says its running better but it has not power?

When it runs in open loop, it runs off presets set in the ecm. It might idel ok in open loop, but when you start getting on it, it might be sluggish like you say. Its been a while since i have driven my car, but i remember if i tried to give it some power from a cold start, it would be sluggish untill it heated up and went into closed loop.

Just try disconnecting your o2 first, that doesnt take long.

Hmmm you have another problem....wait....do you have an NA or a TII? If you have a NA then did your muffler shop add the pickup tube for your port actuators?

This is a definite possibility...we need to start over though. What year/model is this?

I'm not sure if the ports not opening would cause this kind of gas mileage though...are you sure the O2 sensor is functioning properly? They cost like 20 bucks to buy a new one, it couldn't hurt to try it. That would definitely cause that kind of poor gas mileage.

Thats right. We need to know: Year and model, current mods, and you should also check your filters/sensors and check your lines for fuel leaks.
