Gas Gauge Is Not Working Right

after about 100 miles or so the gas gauge will drop from full to empty. (yes i still have gas, ran it for another 130miles and only need 10gallons at the gas station)
i know this has been cover recently, i just need to know the part name i need to replace so i can go to the store or mazda to pick one up. is it called the fuel sensor? or do i ask for the fuel float?
thanks

I think something is really fucked up with your car.
Your other thread states that your voltmeter isn't working correctly, so I think it's safe to say something is wrong with your car that's causing your instrument cluster to not work correctly???

yeah my 88 n/a has the same problem. i took the fuel pump/float assembly out of the tank to see if it was possibly something i could fix myself... it wasn't. The problem mine has is that the mechanical wiper arm (the one that slides across the wire windings and gives the electrical signal to the guage) wore thru the very fine wire of the windings. This results in the guage reading ok until the level drops enough to hit the worn spot in the winding, then BAM, it drops to 'E'. I was able to remove the float/sending unit from the fuel pump, so i would assume that just the fuel level sending unit can be purchased seperately rather than having to get the pump and sending unit together. I dont know how much a new one costs...and i haven't seen anyone selling a used sending unit either. You might have to buy the whole fuel pump unit in order to get the sending unit if the seller isn't willing to seperate the two....

I might pull the unit out again this weekend and take some pics so you can see what im talkin about if you've never seen it before.

Part Number

The fuel quantity sensor part # is FB01-60-960B. It lists for about $85.00 from the dealer and $57.90 from Mazdaspeed.

Bump for a somewhat old post cuz i have the same problem. At full it's fine, but once it hits half tank, it drops to E. My voltmeter sometimes doesn't work too... and my gas warning light doesn't come on at all. Everything else is fine tho. So it's the sender that's messed up? What should I do about this?

If you got the money, replace it with Mazda OEM.
My GAS LOW light sensor just died.
I think all of the FC gas sender thingies are dying about now.

I just fill up when I have around 1/4th of a tank. What's the point of letting it get that low so you actually need the gas light?

What's the point of having a tank of a certain size if you only use 3/4 of it?

Mine showed these symptoms today on the way to Athens and I scrambled like a school girl looking for a gas station. Needless to say I'll be ordering one first thing Monday morning.

There's no point in letting it run far down between fill ups. One of the reasons being I don't know how accurate my gas gauge is. I'd rather play it safe than sorry.

So does the fuel quantity sensor also send the signal to the low fuel light?

I have a vague recollection of what the low fuel light used to look like when it stopped working about 10 years ago in my '90 GTU. Now I have an '88 GTU and it also has no low fuel warning light. Might be worth $57.90 to fix it.

Thanks to the experience of a couple of hundred of fill-ups, I know exactly how accurate my gauge is.

I know how accurate mine is to a certain point. Like I said, I don't mind filling up more often. If I have time to do it and I'm somewhere around 1/4 of a tank, I do it. Who knows when I'll really need to do it and be late for an interview or something.
