Fuxored Oil Pressure Gauge

I'm restoring an '87 TII and I have a problem with the stock oil pressure gauge. When the car is off the needle drops down to the bottom off the gauge and when on it shoots up past the 100 mark. Since it does move, is it safe to assume that just the gauge is shot and that sending unit is working or is this a symptom of the sending unit? If possible, how difficult is it to replce the stock gauge?

Thanks all,
Brian

i had the sending unit go bad on my old car, the guage was at bottom and would not move when car was on. repaced it and guage worked perfectI dont know if thats the only way it fails though. sounds kinda fishy though b/c for guage to go to top, the wire has to be grounded and i'm not sure if a bad sending unit will do that

the guage itself is not hard to replace, just pull out the surround thing around cluster, then pull out cluster and open it up

What happens when you take the wire off the sender unit and turn the key to on?????? Still peg out? Got a short in the wiring. Sits at the bottom? Maybe a bad sender unit. Put a `41 ohm resistor on the end of the wire, and the other end of the resistor to ground. Turn the key on. The meter should go to approx sixty psi. Who knows.

The gauge sits 1/4" BELOW the "0" mark. I pulled the wire off and it sits below the "0" mark. So, it looks like the gauge is shot. I can add an aftermarket gauge when I finish up the car, I just don't like the idea of seeing a broken gauge. I'll try and pull the cluster and just replace the stock gauge first. THank you all.
