"funny" electrical problem... fast help would be nice :)

hi guys!

i've an intresting problem with my 87 n/a

i've changed my starter 3 days before, everything works fine, i was drifing around etc. the last days, everything ok...

today morning, i've sti into my car, take the key, put it to the ON position, activated my fuel pump, activated my stereo, everything fine... put the key onto the START position -> nothing...

everything electrical in the car stopped working... no idiot cluster, no power windows, no lights, no hazard etc. EVERYTHING...

i've checked EVERY fuse in the car, no one was damaged... then i realizied "wtf?" the interior light was running again... sitted again in the car, put the key to ON, idiot cluster came on, stereo worked, lights worked etc. ... key to start position -> same game again

nothing worked, no fuse dead, battery voltage 12,4Volts...

any idea? i'm really pissed off because i've wanted to do some bodywork today in our garage...

Couple of things. To have everything go out is unusual. Silly question, but have you checked your battery connections? Main fuses on driver's strut tower? These cars are also terrible on grounds. There is a good write up in rotary resurrection about additional grounds to add. I had a ton of strange gremlins running around the electrical in my car and it turns out they were ALL related to grounding. I added a bunch of number 4 wire grounds and cleaned up all the existing ones and ...well it's doing fine now. You might also check for rubbing of wires going through various transition points like the firewall, fuse block, etc.

i agree with granite about the stupid question, but that sort of thing was exactly what was happening to my car the few days i was driving around with loose cables due to unhooking the battery to do some wiring n such over a few days. everything would work, but as soon as id give it power to turn over all electrical would cut for a few seconds from the battery cables losing connection cuz of the sudden power draw or some such, im tired. but yes. do what graniteguru said

Two place I would check.#1: is the ground at the Engine, where the bolt goes through both teh Trans housing and the Rear of the Engine. It Also Holds the starter On,,and That Bolt Hold a Ground from the Wiring harness on the Inside Edge of the Rear of the Engine(under the Oil filter..in that General vicinity)..And #2:the Starters' Positive wire From the Battery..The Big *** Wire that connects to the Starter.Check there to see if the wire has Twisted and is Grounding out onto the Starter...while you are there check the spade connector on the Solenoid,as it Supplies 12 volts to the starter when you Key the Ignition to Start..if that is Dirty or Disconnected you would get EveryThing.Lights Horn,Stereo,But No Power to the Starter when you Go to Start the car(key to Start Position).

thx for your very good input

i've fixed the problem just a couple of minutes after my post...

the car starts like a charm after i've took some jumper-wires (hope thats the correct english word ), connected them on my stratus, put the positive cable onto the positive terminal and the negative cable onto my strut (not the negative terminal of my battery)... started like every other day

it was a fu**ed up negative battery CABLE... i've replaced it and now everything works
