That was fun! Blew it up(sort of)

Well, I was out with the Silvias at a local drift spot today, we were all doing pretty good, no big crashes and everything on the car seemed to be running well. So, we're drifting for quite a while, pull over for a bit to let the cars cool and discuss. While we're sitting there we notice some coolant steam coming out from my hood, oh crap. So I shut it off and pop the hood. The temp guage was reading halfway up when I shut it down so I didn't think too much of it. I look around the bay, the overflow bottle is ummm overflowing so I really didn't think much of it. I had just topped off the coolant so I supposed I put too much in.

Then some jackass comes along and tells us he called the cops on us, so we decided to leave for a little while to avoid any problems. As we're driving back to the gas station the overflowing problem continues, then my temp. needle starts to rise. ****, well it's all downhill from were I was to the gas station, so I put it in neutral and turn the heater on full blast. The needle is still rising, and as I'm grabbing the key to just turn it off and hope I make it down the hill POP! My hood pops up from the blast, and there is steam pouring out the back of my car.

Pull into the gas station, give it a second to cool down, open the hood and.... blew the ******* plastic end tank right off the top of my radiator. Guess why! The alt. belt broke and no more water pump. So, tommorow I gotta go pick up a new rad. on my lunch break, and some new belts and then repair the thing in a parking lot so I can drive it home.

Anyone think there will be serious damage to the engine?

Yeah, I know I should have shut it off as soon as the temp guage moved up, but give me the benefit here, we had just been threatened with authoritys, It was reading normal temp when I took off and I had every reason to believe I had just fudged on the coolant level, and that temp guage SHOT up to 3/4, then as I reached to turn off the car the radiator popped who uses plastic for a 13psi system anyway?

no big crashes means one nasty looking curb collision with only some rim damage. still drove fine. Those KA powered 240SXs with no LSD understeer alot....

yeah I would say you will see some bubbles in your coolant from now on. Why would you drive your car knowing it was loosing coolant so violently? Oh yeah and being a motorcycle rider myself thanks for spilling coolant all over the road. Thats whay cause serious motorcycle injuries. Taxi cabs are the worst for leaking oil and coolant. Let us know how the rebuild goes. Oh yeah did you ever find out if the cops were called? And if so what the hell would they have done anyways? Not worth a motor.

Got to talk to the cops later on that night, they swung by to say hi after the dude told them were we headed, and the colors of all our cars. Since the officers themselves didn't see anything they couldn't do squat.

Anyway, like I said in the post the temp needle was just rising from the halfwaymark. Fact of the matter is it never made it to red, so it was hotter than recomended but never overheated, I'm not that dumb. Naturally the radiator place only had a S5 radiator, and the one they said was for my car was not(had a radiator cap on the endtank) so, on Monday I'm taking it to be retanked. If that doesn't work Koyo for me.

The part that sucks is I had to tow the car from the parking lot, went to U-haul tell them the kind of car I have their "international database" tells me this little trailer they have will have no clearance issues... right. Go to the parking lot start up the car(hey what do you know it runs like a champ because it never overheated. a 20year old under-engineered piece of plastic just blew up) get it up on the trailer and the front bumper scrapes a little bit on the trailer, but we get it on and get it home. She didn't do as well coming off. My dad was helping me back it off and all was good until the trailer suddenly tilted down and my bumper was dropped onto the pointless tow ball that is in the middle of teh wheels. Crack, time for S5 converion. Looks like U-haul will be paying since they said the trailer would work.

Did you ever consider that 20yr old "under-engineered" plastic just saved your engine? I think you're being a bit unappriciative. Make the system out of aluminum or SS next time. See what the first thing to go "pop" is then.

Oh... and now for story fallacies

If the Alt belt went, you knew 100% Because of the idiot lights.
If the Alt belt went, the air pump belt still pulls the water pump.
If you have removed the air pump belt, you SHOULD(meaning you're a fool if you don't) have a dual belt pulley on the alternator.
If you are using dual belts, and both belts broke, WTF didn't you notice the idiot lights?

Stop trying to act all badass and fix your radiator. Don't go drifting near anyone's house business or school. All it does is show your incomptence in the world. Don't be afraid of authority, especailly when *NOW* you know they can't do **** without a complainers signed witness statement. (So actually yea, you could have still gotten ticketed... per complaint statement.)

Go fix your radiator and be glad your engine isn't toast.

Oh... and get a new water temp gauge. Stock has basicaly modes: cold, run temp., and damaging engine.

EDIT: And don't feel too bad, my FC eats the dual belts every few months.

underengineered piece of crap plastic tanks: that is not what saved my engine, the temps were rising, I was getting off the road pop or not I my engine was fine. All the plastic tank did was fail, and cost me money.

Your "fallacies"(you miss used that word, infact the statements you made were fallacies being that you believed them to be true but were incorrect.)
idiot lights didn't work, the first one to come on was low coolant.
air pump is gone that was mentioned.
dual pulley alt. is at the powdercoaters at the moment, the car was purchased without an airpump so I had just received my two pulley FD alt.
Wasn't drifting near houses, it's in a warehouse district in the midle of nowhere. Near as we can gather the guy heard us from the baseball fields that are about 200yards away through a field. Seems he thought it was his civil duty to come scold us.
please, know what your talking about before you start on a rampage you aren't the only one on this board that knows something about cars.

Dezerte: top secret local drift spot, that is now checked by the boys in blue every half hour or so once the sun goes down. Used to be a great place.

My FD alt ate through belts like they were nothing. Upon instalation of my last pair of belts, I realised how poorly designed the dual pulley was for the application. It looked like it beloned on a complerely different car or application. Anyhow, I ended up re-installing my s5 with higgi's pulley and the belt eattage is gone.

Meh, point taken, I'm in an indifferent mood, and I think I sounded like an *** before.

Yea, I need to get some washers & realign my alternator. I have a dual pulley on it (FC) and the belts don't line up quite right. The alternator needs to move forward a bit. Right now I'm getting all sorts of fun black belt-dust on everything. The fan just blows it all over.

And get into the habit of checking belts when you open the hood. It usually takes me somewhere around 10 minutes to get gas. Premix, gas, check oil, belts, other fluids, tire pressure (and add air to my right front tire), clean windows, etc.

premix is when you add 2 cycle TCW3 oil to your gas- as a precaution for a dry start there are threads everywhere on this forum giving opinions on this subject! look before you type!!! if you have to leave an area you are drifting in after 10 minutes, then it shows how absolutely arrogant you are. find a warehouse district in your area that closes at 5 and go there if you can not wait to test you car at a scca event or other such acceptable place. don't get me wrong i love to street race- but it is not worth going to jail over! quoting someone that talks badly about where you drift also goes to credit your intelligence on this matter. think before you post and do not require more knoweledgeable people on this forum to catter to you and i really don't want to hear your crying when you pop your motor because of not researching possible problems and you not caring for your car the way it needs to be maintained! I spent my first month on the forum digging up info before i made comment on premix poll/ thread. learn how to help yourself!!!!!!!!!!

Now I see that it's kids like that, that made you assume I was one of the unresponsible ones. I can assure I minimize the risks as much as possible when I drift. After hours or not a school is nowhere for that kind of driving.

Anyway, I got the FD alt with pulley from silverRotor. I had heard nothing but good about it. Anyone hear if it tends to eat belts?
