I can clearly remember the previous version was 80mm SS, not mild steel. I don't know what the wall thickness was through. If it was 3mm, I bet it sounded better that the current thin-wall version as you say. IMO the minor weight disadvantage (<10lb) would be worth it. That ringing noise bugs me.
