Fuel pump replacement

Is it as easy as the FSM makes it sound?

hell ya as long as you don't break off the heads of the small screws. Fold the hatch carpet up, remove the four screws holding the body panel on, remove the ~8 screws on fuel tank panel, pull the assembly out, one or two hose clamps and two electric eyelets and the old one is out. as per FSM assemble in reverse.

Its easy, real easy. Just done mine last week. if your tiny screws are a pain to get out go to a local hardware store and pick up some new ones (like stainless) I paid 35cents ea for mine and its alot nicer looking... lol.

Tools needed: Screw Driver, Some type of vice grips for clamps, Small wrench or socket and your good to go.

Make sure ur gas is still good so you dont burn the new one out like I did at first

How is this possible???

Do you mean you didn't have enough gas in the tank and that made it run hot, and thus ruined your new pump? Or you had crud in the gas tank to begin with..I have never heard of bad gas wrecking a fuel pump, it just doesn't happen. But I guess your idea of bad gas isn't mine then?

No I mean the gas smelled like ****, was really yellow and just sat in the tank for 3 years before I picked the car up. I drained it and bam new gas does wonders.

I had 7 gal. of **** yellow gas in my tank and it is just nasty.

I just read somewhere that alot of people suggest upgrading the wires that run to the fuel pump when you upgrade to a larger pump? Can anyone suggest some light on this?

Talking about the fuel pump rewire? That mainly refers to bypassing the fuel pump resistor/relay on TIIs and S5 NAs, but you can also replace the wires in the fuel pump harness as well. Take a look at them first though. If they're clean and you have 12V at the pump, don't bother. If your fuel pump assembly is rusted out, by all means run new wire.
