Lightbulb Fuel problem solved...I hope

Well im cold, i smell like gas, and my eyes are burning ( i got some gas shot in em on accident, lol), but...

i think i found out why i can't get my rebuilt engine started up, i spent the better part of the day double checking grounds and injector connections but i just removed the UIM and found that i have no fuel going past the secondary fuel rail inlet.

Now i think i understand this flow correctly, now gas initially comes in at the secondary fuel rail, and im guessing the thing on the end of it held on with two 10mm bolts is a fuel pressure regulator. Well after that it should go through that rail down to the primary fuel rail where what isn't used is returned to the tank.

Well no gas is getting past that regulator, should it be letting gas through wether or not its seeing vacuum? It has seen vacuum while i was cranking it and trying to pull starting it, and the fuel rail after that regulator was dry when i pulled it apart.

So is replacement my answer?

Ummm fuel comes from the filter, goes into the primary fuel rail, then to the secondary, then back to the tank......

Unless you got some weird setup going on, fuel cannot run through the FPR the way you described. So, as everyone said, it's backwards

On a side note: what is it about J-spec that's reversed? Something like the fuel lines... dunno.

On the Jspec rats nest, I believe the hardlines are reversed, compaired to our US versions.

wow im really confused then, i did replace some of the fuel lines but i didn't think i messed it up like that...lol

1. ok so fuel should go to the lower injectors first, the injectors in the intermediate housings...those are the primaries right? fuel enters on the side towards the front of the car.

2. then fuel goes out the side on the firewall side up to the secondary rail, the ones one the UIM then to the fpr where it regulates how much flows back to the tank

well i think i just explained how it works to myself right? Ok so what i did was when i removed the lines coming up from the fuel filter and the return line i got them backwards, so i didn't lie i did fix my fuel problem.

DAMN I FEEL LIKE A JACKASS!!!!!!

Nonononono.
Fuel should travel like this.

1. Fuel filter on drivers side of car.
2, Hard fuel rail with vacumes nest into REAR firewall side of the lower fuel rail.
3. Out front side of lower fuel rail into front side of secondary upper fuel rail.
4. Out firewall side rear of secondary fuel rail into hard fuel line.
5. Hard line into hard return line to tank

It depends on whether it's a turbo or NA, Spyder...

NA's fuel comes in to the front of the rail, at the PD, and exits at the back, Turbos are opposite, I think, from what I've heard on here...

yeah its an N/A S4...1988

well i got that fuel mess fixed and its still not running god dammit. I sprayed some starting fluid into it and it coughed and sputtered (it was cool, first time my engine has done that in over a year!) but after the ether burnt off, that was it, nothing else, im still pretty sure im not getting fuel.

So its one of two things now, i may have damaged the fpr by running the fuel backwards into it....

or

My injectors are ****, i already had my secondary injectors cleaned, and i should have taken in my primary's while i had em out but i was lazy and never got around to it, so i think ill dig into those next

thanks for all the help guys....especially wayne, you've helped me out a bunch these two days, i probably would have taken bricks to my car already if it weren't for you, lol

My bad, I forgot this was a NA.

So you have a good set of cleaned secondary injectors?? Heck man, swap those with the primaries! There the same 460's, nothing wrong with swaping them from what I recall.

yeah thats a good idea, as long as they are the same....

hell im not supposed to rev the thing past 4k for like 1500 miles anyways, so ill just keep it under 3800k lol. I guess swapping them would at least tell me if thats the problem.

Fuel flow = filter - rail - pulse damper - rail - pressure regulator - tank return.

The rail order varies with the model, but the FPR (with a vac nipple) is always just before the tank return.

Trust me, Ive been there...In fact one of my longest troubleshooting marathons ever on my car (2 straight days of nothing but working on the car, eating, and sleeping) was due to...a bad primary fuel injector, lol...

Okay so this thread kinda helps me out a bit, but the way some of it's written is not truly clear. I've studied the factory manual a million times already and came up with the same fuel flow path that SureShot said. My problem is also that the fuel is NOT going past the FPR. It IS in fact getting to and through the secondary fuel rail (pulled the FPR and checked that fuel did in fact flow through the rail). The fuel pump is brand new (literally) as is the fuel filter, everything else is the same. I thought at first the FPR was no good so I got Fieldyz to come down and we put my FPR on his car and his on mine and it worked fine on his car, but his DID NOT work on my car (both cars are '86 N/A GXL models). At one point I thought it was flooded so I did the unflood procedure twice, nothing then I decided to go through and see where fuel was and was not getting to. First thing I did was check the feed line after the fuel filter and it was good, then the return line...nothing. That's when I decided to check the Secondary rail and FPR and that's where I am today. Ignition is good (checked that already and added new plugs just because...wires are also new), starter brand new, battery brand new, fuel is nice and fresh (I was surprised my tank was sooooooo clean while Fieldyz tank was a touch dirty...we won't discuss his fuel pump filter...haha wow). I'm glad that someone is having the same issue as I am but I want to know what's really wrong and why there is no fuel pressure. On a side note we also decided to check the fuel cap to make sure it was still good so we swapped his on mine and vice versa again...nothing.

Please help,
Kiyo

fuel pump help

Hey, I just bought a 87 Turbo II and I was wondering if anyone could help me. Does anyone know if, when you turn the key on should you be able to hear the fuel pump. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
