FMIC questions

so i've been thinking about going with a front mount but don't really have the money nor do i want to spend it if i had it for one of the name brand kits like the Greddy's or HKS's out there. i've been doing a little looking into the NPR ones and have been wondering who else has gone with them and what sizes they have. also what all comes along with getting one of these universal front mounts. i realize some custom fab work will need to be done as far as mounting or welding it goes but other than that what else is there? i know i'll need some new tubing as well and may have a place to do that but they were also the same place that was suppose to do my exhaust and if anybody was following that little fiasco i'm not to sure if i want to deal with them again. i've also been informed that if i wanted to ever upgrade from the stock BOV this would be the time to do it and just have it mounted to the new IC piping. is this true as well? i'm going to keep doing research on this but any info that i can get from my own questions is more helpful.

so like normal thank you guys ahead of time for any info or recommendations you might be able to throw out there for me.

I think the Greddy is fairly decently priced at $950, and its a freakin' awesome IC.

By the time you add up all the fabbing costs for getting the piping bent and welded properly, end tanks put on, and installation, you'll be around half that cost, and won't have near the IC performance.

All in all, a FMIC is an expensive mod no matter what.

As for the BOV... that would be the perfect time to upgrade to an aftermarket BOV and have it welded to the IC piping.

all the ones i've seen so far on ebay come with the end tanks already on. and i don't think the pipes should be that much. i mean i had the same guy that i would have do the IC pipes fab me a 2 1/2" stainless midpipe for $20. not to shabby i don't think. plus they do all sorts of fun things with powercoating so if i didn't want to have the pipes polished i could always take the easy way out and have them done to match the car or something. and i do love that HKS SS BOV and would like to get my hands on one of those, preferably the universal one so i don't have to shell out the extra $100 for the exact fit one.

I'll be making a low buget one at the end of the month or so... I won a starion IC off ebay for $50. I'm picking up some dynomax 2.25" "U-bend" exhuast piping. $15 each or so. shouldn't take more then 4 I don't think. the silicone connecters are expension. like $30 a foot. need atleast one plus clamps. take a hack saw and cut the piping to line up. mark it and take it to a local shop to weld it. paint it with high temp paint. then use silicone connecters where it goes to the IC, turbo, and TB.

well i'll deffinetly say good luck with that project. hope it comes out well and works for ya. you'll deffinetly have to keep everyone posted. you know how people just love to make stuff up themselves and get it to work. people just jump on one right after another after that point. gotta make things better and cheaper than the next guy in line.

does anybody have the measurements of a normal front mount from say HKS or Apexi? the ones from those companies seem to be more rectangular as if they were obviously ment to fit in the space provided in our cars whereas the NPR's and Starion's are more square shaped and just all around big.i've heard NPR has a big version and a small version of their truck intercoolers so i take it the small one would be more than sufficiant if i were to come across one?

yeah but is gonna cost less building it your self that buying a almost $1k kit. a good fmic is a small npr intercooler but have to buy cupling and tubing, and you have to cut and probably weld and still wont cost more that $500

$500 and many many many hours of labor to make it fight right. if you have spare time its one thing...... its alot of work to make an intercooler work correctly though

Are you gonna run the pipes underneath near where the oil cooler lines go? I was planning on doing this and at least in my car it seems like that the only place to run the damn things...

What do you think?

Thanks

Hmm.. Ok. If you would, it would be cool if you to post some pictures of exactly how you positioned your radiator. I have an electrical fan on each side of my radiator as well. 2 16"s. Haha, I know about squeezing it into tight places.

Thanks

I had a NPR IC in the same position. Just on the other side of the rad with pipes around it, and it really minimized the piping length(press loss, response loss). Although with the stock turbo it still was terrible overkill with such a big core. At the time I didnt know a whole lot on the topic. It necessitated relocating the battery. Pics arent really necesary as it looks just as you would imagine. Now my Starion unit sits in the same exact spot. And when I get a Spearco unit, it will be really easy to lengthen them to the far front opening in the bumper cover.

What i think about NPR FMIC

THere are 2 versions of the NPR FMIC. There are huge ones (almost as big as the stock radiator) and there are small ones (a little bigger and better than Starion ones). Personally i will be running the small NPR with a full T04.

THere are ways to install the small NPR unit.. But there is no way of installing it right w/out cutting some of the radiator supports. Batt also must be relocated. With my NPR set-up i had the end tanks customized so the inlet/outlet faces up. Here are few pics..

My plan is to buy a small used NPR for like $200 or less and mount it myself and take it to this shop to make some intercooler piping which should be $150 or so. Then I got a pretty damn good i/c for less than $400.
