Flywheels nut coming loose?

well, I searched about the vibration and chattering noise I have been hearing around the clutch. The problem that related to the prob I am having the most was a loose flywheel nut. It makes a noise at low rpm and at idle. It stops when I put the clutch in. I have a new clutch and TB. Oh, what are PP bolts? That was the other possibility. I know that the flywheel nut does not have any losck tight and may not have been torqued properly.

thats pretty crazy to think that the flywheel nut is coming lose. From the factory they are torqued to 300+ ft-lbs

Is the question how to retorque the flywheel nut or just in genral what to do. Let us know. If torque properly you should really have a problem with the bolt. Mine was tightened by a 275# man, on a 2 foot breaker bar. That's over 300 ft-lbs of torque.

Did you pay attention to your Pressure Plate Bolts? You will notice 2 of them are shouldered and go into countersunk holes in the Flywheel.

Maybe your engine is turning in the wrong direction and its making the nut come loose.
What direction do you go when you put the car in first gear and let out the clutch?

just rent a power tool to tight it, and don't stop hitting the trigger until the nut stops moving, you will not strip anything, that thing gots to be very tight.

Buy a 2 1/8 socket from Sears.

Get one of your friendly RX-7 Forum buddies to mail you a 54mm socket on loan.

Go to the mazda dealership with 100 bucks just for colateral. They will give you a 4 foot breaker bar, and a 54mm nut Thats what i did. Make sure you get a flywheel stopper to.

2 1/8 inch works fine, got mine from Sears, and a 3/4" sliding socket driver thingey to give me some oomph.. locked the flywheel with a 4 foot long piece of angle iron, and stomped on the driver, and that thing came right off.. did the same thing to put the new one back on.

Don't worry about the chatter noise. It's pretty typical.

Could be the clutch/Flywheel chattering against one another, or T.O. bearing, but doubt it.

And guys, what's up with all these retarded replies?

Motor turning in the wrong direction? That is retarded.

Make it easy on yourself and buy the flywheel removal bar form Mazdatrix.

Its a 3 foot long bar with the socket welded to it. Makes it a snap to remove it.

I didn't notice a nut difference on my flywheel on my 91 TII. Are they like that also in the 91?

you just made me think of something, if we made our engines turn the other way we could have a rear engine FWD car...... wouldnt that be fun in the snow.....

For the people with less imagination, you could simply put the car in reverse.

Sounds like you discribing through out bearing chatter. My car does that too. Chances are its not the flywheel bolts since they usually put a little locking mechanism on them. I think you would really know when the fly is comming lose.

I had a VERY similar problem, even with a new T/O bearing. Turns out only the OEM T/O bearings are good, pretty much any aftermarket one's will cause problems. I had to take everything out and replace my collar, and a OEM T/O bearing. I doubt its your flywheel, otherwise you could probably move it with your hands.

Posting without a sense of humour? That is retarded.

Jokes are lost on some people, I guess..... Maybe you need to drink more.

Wankel 7: On S5 cars, the flywheel is attached via a single 54mm (or 2 1/8") nut, just like S4's.

Bzzzt, try again...

The engine does not reverse rotation when you shift into R.&nbsp Thus, the flywheel will NOT spin in reverse when you do go into R either.

The reversal of the driveshaft spinning is done INSIDE the transmission - downstream of the engine/flywheel.

Uhmm... I think he meant that putting the car in reverse will do the EQUIVALENT... (the car will go backwards.... eh?)
