Flywheel shims

Getting my flywheel resurfaced and the tech said its just barely under spec. I have no more money after going all out on this exedy clutch. Can anybody help me. Flywheel is any aftermarket 10Ib steel unit that came with the engine from a JDM half cut so I dont know who makes it.

I have no idea what flywheel shims are thats just what he said.

I wouldn't normally recommend such a thing but...

My brake rotors are under spec and have been for 5 years. Now I do not condone running **** under spec, especially safety equipment like brakes, but you must realize manufacturers make their specs conservative.

My brake rotors haven't exploded or cracked, although they will be getting replaced here soon.

I'd just go ahead and run it since if the clutch or pressure plate fails at least you can still stop. I know money is an issue and that is the only reason I am suggesting it. **** I am broke half the year and can't afford replacing rotors that are at the OEM suggested limit. I am going to get new rotors and a new transmission when income tax rolls in, but I wouldn't worry about dying over a slightly out of spec clutch, you can always mess with it later

Um... How does he know what "the spec" is if you can't even identify the make of flywheel?

It looks fine to me but he put doubt in my mind.
Ummm. The "step" from the clutch surface and the rest of the flywheel is very small.

Don't they machine both the face and the "step" where the pressure plate mounts? Anytime I've had a flywheel surfaced they take equal amounts of both to make sure the pressure from the plate doesn't change.

this. to the O.P. if you looked in the FSM, you would see that there is no spec for the stock flywheel, as you are not supposed to machine it. since we do, we must then take equal amounts off of both the friction surface and the surface that the pressure plate mounts to. this works perfectly fine.

so there is no spec, you must measure the step, and then machine it so the step distance remains the same.

The friction surface is higher than the pressure plate bolt surface, if you shimmed the pressure plate you would be going in the wrong direction.

The step is .020" on all turbo and RX-8 brand new flywheels.

If the machinist is removing any material from the side of the ring gear it is time for a new flywheel. We find that most flywheels can be resurfaced a couple times, depending on the disk used, many of the puck clutches can leave localized hot spots that cause fracturing of the flywheel, which just can't be removed.
