Flywheel Nut?
Flywheel Nut?
Hello Folks,
Do you second gen guys use a washer under the flywheel nut? I have worked on more first gen stuff, where a washer is under the nut and then flattened to hold the nut in place.
I looked at the Mazda micro fiche and did not see one, whats the story?

Permatrex Red Loctite can be found at any automotive store for a couple bucks.
As a side note, red loctite is the same fluid that you use on the front 19mm bolt... which is the reason it is so hard to get off if you don't heat it with a torch first to denature the loctite bonds.
hmm,.. i didnt use loctite on my flywheel nut, its been fine so far but ill be sure to loctite it when i have the motor out. Are you sure red is ok? the whole word "perminant" kinda scares me... wouldnt blue be better than nothing?

Red is what the factory uses, and what I use. I can still get it off again after putting a flywheel on with it.
The red loctite get's denatured and breaks down around 500 or so degrees fahrenheit. So you just heat up the nut with a propane/MPS gas torch for 2-3 minutes, and the loctite loses its bonding strength. This is why red loctite is completely useless on exhaust nuts.
The FSM calls for red loctite... but I suppose blue would be better than nothing. At 300+ ft-lbs, its a pretty safe bet is not coming loose; but then again, a dropped flywheel can kill you.
