no start

Backfiring and smoke means unburnt fuel. You need to check all your main fuses first, then check for spark, then report back. rx7doctor

Do not start a rotary like you do a piston engine. Do not pump or push and hold the pedal to the floor. Turn it over but never touch or press the gas pedal. I suspect you flooded it if you messed with the gas.

Do a "search", in the upper right top of the screen, on flooding. There will be a ton of posts and you will quickly become an expert on flooding and how to avoid it. Good luck.
