Flipped Tii
Alright heres the deal I bought an 87 TII that had been run up a guide wire and tiped onto its lid so the body is really fucked. The car has a street port motor that has about 90,xxx miles on it and a bunch of other goodies on it like suspension. I fired the car up today after changing the oil and filter and it started right up but smokes really bad. The smoke started to clear after a while but not completly and the car idles at about 3,300rpm. I turned it off cause it was almost dark and I had to go home. This engine suposidly ran well before the acident. What are some reasons the car could idle so high? Does any one think this motor could still be good? any thoughts would be appreciated. It would be easy to drop this motor in my car if its still good but the other route is to put all the parts on a j-spec I have?!?!?! FRUSTRATED!!

well I let it run for about 15 -20 min 0r so. Before I turned it off I jabbed the throttle to see if I could get the RPMs to come down but all I got was a back fire and they just went back to like 3300. Right after it was wrecked it was started but only for a few min cause the shroud was stopping the fan. The car sat for about a month before I started it because it was wrecked about a month ago.

Check (and set) the TPS.
Setting the TPS on a turbo RX-7:

The smoke is either oil blow-by (search - it's very common and fixable) or else the oil rings in the motor are failing. It's probably oil-blow by. Tipping and all that might have given the turbo a good jolt. With luck, you'll only have to replace one gasket.

perhaps the throttle linkage got wacked out of shape or something is leaking..ie vac line, intercooler pipes, TID, BOV..etc etc.
Oh yeah, my 88 with 40,000 miles on it smokes whenever I start it up during it's storage period. I try to fire it up every couple months or so and when it does...yahoo. However, it should start really easily. Mine is crank crank crank..vroooom. Then I let it warm up to temp, but yeah..it'll smoke the garage up. I figure it's either oil that can seep past the control rings or through the oil injectors.

Well today I let the car run for the second time for quite a while and the smoke cleared up to almost nothing. We reved it up a few times to see if the idle would come down and finaly on like the 5th try we heard a loud sound like a BOV and the idle came down to about 1200rpm. When you rev it up though before and after the idle droped it would stay fairly clear but start to smoke when the RPMs were on the way back down then graduly clear up again. Is it possible that maybe the turbo is leaking oil into the motor? Any suggestions as far as things to try to get this motor to run better and find out if its any good would be appreciated. Like I said before it starts up like a champ and feels like it revs strong I cant run it for long though cause the radiator is fucked....im going to put a different one on it tommorow so I can run it with out it heating up. Thanks!

The smoke is probably blow by but the rpm problem could be something else alltogether. I had the same problem with a 04 wrx and after we tested and checked averything it ended up being a mass air flow sensor.

I'm not sure on a stock tii but I would guess the crank case is vented pre turbo. If it flipped oil would slosh up the filler neck and drain to the intake. when he starts it it's going to pull the oil through the turbo and intercooler. Then the engine is going to pull the oil through the top mount and burn it off. He says the smoke is clearing up but i bet there is still a good amount in the ic.

lol if any one wants to know the end of the story...............5years later here it is:
Motor never stopped smoking so I took it to Atkins and they rebuilt it. Who ever the jackass was that ported the motor *cough* Hayes Rotary * cough* ported too deep into the oil passage. Put the rebuilt motor and all of the other TII parts into a straight 88 GTU. Drove it for a while then tired of the rotary thing and it sat till this year when I sold it.
I now drive a 450hp civic lol
