Flat Black?
I have an 87 TII, I use it for drifting (on tracks) and I have a dented door and driver's fender. I'm going to get these peices replaced soon. I will need to get them painted, so I started thinking "I drift and if my car gets messed up again it will be costly to paint it". My question is, will it look bad if I get my car painted flat black. I will have a good car painter do it, I won't get it done half assed. Any thoughts. The reason I'm thing about going flat black is because if I wreck my car it won't be that expensive to paint. Later I plan on getting some nice polished bbs wheels to go with the black paint

ive got a friend that painted his 7 flat black. it doesnt take a genius to paint with a can. it was his first time and it looked pretty good. you have to make sure that you start away from the car at first and get closer till your at the right distance so that it doesnt drip. a couple of coats later and your done.

It's stupid.
It looks getto.
(Seen the flat black S13 in Sport Compact Car???)
When you crash, it'll still look like ****.
Paint is still paint - you still need to fix it or it looks like a getto car.
It will make the car HOT in the sun.

My FC is flat black. I rattle-canned it.
Why? I don't give an F how it looks, the stock paintjob was buffed and faded to pink, and it has parts from a few different cars on it. It's also nice to buy a fender and only spend fifteen minutes to install it and paint-match it.
As long as my car is one colour, I'm happy.

It'll look really good with bird crap on it, it's really, really hard to wax, bikini models won't want to pose on the hood of your car and everybody will now that you have no aesthetic sense at all.

As for the rest of the thread, the more and more money and time I put into maintaining my paint, the more I see the value in a $50 flat black job. It's not the greatest looking thing in the world, but you can't beat the upkeep.
My next 1st gen will most certainly be flat black with a tasteless purple flame job.

Mine was flat black when I got it. The chick I bought it from did it herself. She used primer, and it went a dingey mottled grey over the winter. She also did no prep work. Just sprayed over the pinstripes and flaking paint. The car had that far away look. The further away you were, the better it looked! If you're gonna rattle-can it, use PAINT, not primer. Primer will just suck up moisture, and look like crap real quick. Don't forget to sand everything sown real good, and tape off your windows. I'm still razoring paint off the windows from the crappy job she did.

I think flat black looks cool when its done right. Maybe if you sand it down to the primer it will look a bit smoother. As long as you tape everything off, and dont overspray. Of course i never did like the idea of having a black 7 cuz they get hot enough as it is.

if you spray the car flat black, how much/what type of prep work do you have to do other than mask of the windows and seals? can you just spray right over the existing paint? do you have to shave it down to the metal and primer it? sorry i'm kinda new.

looks shitty but is cheep. I guess it's just a matter of what you're willing to give up in looks for money. My dad and his brother resprayed our truck in it's factory two-tone paint in maybe four hours time. The paint was still there when it was getting towed away for junking.
If you've got a spray gun, compressor and a garage you can do a pretty good job using pro paint. Sure it may cost 200 v 50 but you'll thank urself later when u see one of those millions of flat blacked crx's drive by.

Just make sure you buy good paint. Not that $3.99 or less crap. For prep work, remove any pinstriping with a heat gun. Wash your car really good with something that'll remove the wax, like dish soap. Then, at least scuff the paint with a scotchbrite pad, so the paint will stick better. If you want it to look really smooth, wet sand it with 400 grit. Pay close attention to areas where the old paint is cracked or peeling; that'll show through the new paint. When you paint, don't be impatient. A bunch of light coats will always look better than one heavy coat.
