I'll still never understand how people can afford all performance offerings for their car, self-install and can't manage to get a paint job

Wanna save money on paint? Do some prep yourself...some initial sanding/stripping/removing parts and a quality masking job will save a load of $ on a decent paint job. Pretty much anyone can remove lights/door handles and mask the car well by themselves...

My friend has his primered flat black and people love it. He also beats the crap out of the car so it definitly works for him. If you are really driting regularly, you dont want to drop 2k on a painjob thats just going to get destroyed. Doesnt mean you have to rattlecan it forever. Hell get a $300 Macco job and at least when you jack it up, its not a huge loss.

I want to kick SCC's *** for flat-blacking their cars. I've seen 5 flat-black cars since that article. Its gay. If you can afford an exhaust + various gauges. You can afford a paintjob.

Flat black is actually the wrong paint to use. It is basically a primer, or at least it used to be called that. Now, it's frequently called 'Charcoal black'. The problem with primer is that it absorbs water, which is a bad thing for paint to do.

A better choice is the Krylon 'Semi-Flat Black'. It's halfway between flat and gloss. It may look a little odd at first, but it ages better. Plus, it's easier to get it to not look splotchy and it seems more consistent between manufacturing batches.

If you think Import shows are bad, try taking this to an 'all Ford show', it was fun to stand back and 'listen':

I would have walked right past the black 72? to the red 1970 Fastback. Flat colors will get stains from dirt and other stuff over time, a semi gloss would be better. I was thinking of possibably using something like a House of Color sealer to get a satin type of finish but in white. Checkout how the street rodders paint the old school rods or rat rods with a semigloss paint.

Are you kidding?! "Walk past it"? Look at the pic, nobody would park next to it!

The '73 has had the semi-gloss/semi-flat black for 6 or 7 years, at least. As you can see in the pic, the semi-gloss does have a little sheen and looks less grey than the flat blcak in the other pics in this thread.

People have trouble identifying the year without a grill. I have the driving lights inset from the headlights and the turn signals are mounted behind the new grill (flat expanded steel mesh painted black), you can hardly see them unless they are flashing.

The red 70 reminds me of my old car. Just a regular fastback, not a Mach1 or Boss.

Here is a front view of the grill with the driving light 'guards' off:

well, i didnt get it from ebay...i went straight through raceonusa......... took 5 months to get it! but i cant complain about the quality....fitment is pretty good....and since its a fiberglass kit, of coarse there are some blemishes that need to be sanded down during paint prep
