Exhaust, intake, and S5 UIM swap for power. Then KYB AGX with Racing Beat springs for suspension. For more, check out the n/a performance page that has links and how-tos for most of the above, and more info besides. It's community maintained so expect it to be updated periodically.

First, fix everything on it. Change ALL fluids - motor oil, tranny oil, diff oil (if applicable), coolant. Replace all of the soft lines - oil hoses, vac lines, etc. Change spark plugs and possible get the injectors professionally cleaned. Pulling the intake to get to the injectors will get you familiar with the car and more comfotable working on it. Cheak the belts and spark plug wires. I'm sure theres some other stuff, too, but thats the major things.

Once you have done all of that, the major mods for an NA are exhaust and intake. For the intake, you can get the Bonez kit from www.rx7.com for a good price. Make sure you make a Cold Air Intake if you do that, there are many threads about doing that already if you search. For the exhaust, there's amy options. The best for you s4 is the racing beat downpipe (or header) and presilencer. This allows the aux ports to continue working. After that, you can get whatever catback you want. The most economical upgrade would be to just get the RB downpipe/presilencer and stick with the stock catbacks for a while.

ignore this portion of the post, its negigable at best, youd gain less than a 1/2hp tops.

Change all fluids, have brakes inspected/done, replace broken parts around the car.
do preventive maintnence before you start modding the car.

Modifications are up to you, what do you want out of the car?

Suspension is a good place to start, get some good tires on the car if you plan on spirited driving.

Power mods are up to you, but dont plan on getting much power out of a naturally aspirated rotary keg.

the question is how far do you want to take this.

hope this helps

do maintainence and dont mod for a year until you get the hang of the car

This is actually one of the only swaps with dyno-proven HP increase; you can expect 10-15 HP from the swap. Check the dyno and how-to here. It's not a straight forward modification, so consider it once you're more comfortable with the car.

So by that reasoning, he might as well go get a geo.
He is right about leaning how to drive it right, though. That doesn't mean there isn't any point in modding it.

Definitely do maintenence first. All filters, hoses, fluids, belts, wheel bearings, alignment, plugs, plug wires, fix paint. Tune the engine: idle speed, TPS, timing, etc. This will get you comfortable with the car. Then do exhaust upgrades, and move on from there. Suspension upgrades are supposed to be worth it.

If aaroncake says do it, it is probably a good idea. I have read all his stuff, and have heard lots of good things about him. Thread topic idea: "We heart heart you, aaroncake!"

make sure all ur fluids are good, coolant, oil, differential, tranny...but i recommend exhaust or even cheaper, make a cold air intake, prolly only cost you 50 bucks or maybe less if u already have a nice filter. lmk if u need any help.

If you are interested I have an S4 LIM, S5 UIM, S5 Dynamic chamber just about ready to go. Has all gaskets and a freshly cleaned pair of 5th 6th port sleeves with Pineapple Racing sleeve inserts. Also has the needed blockoff plates for ACV and BAC. You`ll need to use your actuators for 5th 6th ports. There is a little VERY minor fitting work you might need to do. You could port match using gaskets as a template too if you wish.

I`m in no hurry to sell the setup so you can let me know when ever you are ready, no rush
