Talking First Drive - '87 RX7 Turbo II Project - #1 Video Movie Time

I managed to stall it too....
First Drive - '87 RX7 Turbo II Project

I believe that whining to be the rear differential. And my exhaust is rattling a bit.

I need advice on how to drive stick better, especially starting on an incline, I'm just learning.

that really is a good example of how you drive. it's going to take years,so remeber that. if you dont you'll lose a good example of a good looking rx7.

You just need time in the seat to find where the friction point is on your clutch, You will get it. A trick for starting on a hill is to use the hand brake and not the foot break untill you get comfortable with starting on a hill. It frees up your foot to make things easier. Nice car btw!

Thanks guys!!

This video is from this morning when I drove it for the very first time after a huge amount of work. I drove it last summer but then took it all apart to redo it my way. So I am not in the 5 spd mode right now, my daily is a automatic Volvo so this is way different.

Look here for the whole build up - lots of pics- '87 TII Overhaul - from bouncing idle to engine refurbishment

Walk Around at Idle-
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bvORLyU7tN0&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bvORLyU7tN0&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Also is there any special break in procedure for a new clutch?

Thanks guys.

Yeah it's a long driveway, no fun when icy either.

About 1,500 or so on the remanufactured motor.

Dude. ur stash is ballin and you have a really long driveway lol. Sounds like i super nice car. Im wondering wut ur #'s are where the idiot lights should be but im just gonna look at you build up thread.

And dont worry about the stall. Ull get back into driving stick mode. I once stalled a car and it didnt move a inch. Lol it was the most depressing stall of my life(ive only stalled twice hehe)

Thumbs up

Right, it's the display for the NGK A/Fx wideband O2 monitor, I thought it would look good up there and it fits great, we're gonna make a new piece of trim for it and the idiot lights. I welded the sensor in the DP like so-

I still have to hook it up to the Rtek though, then I'll be able to actually log the wideband and make use of it with the fuel correction in the Stage 2.1 ECU. From what I can tell just by watching is that it seems to dip to 12's under boost but could probably use some tweaks.

we're only at stock boost for now, or should I say that I am not running any form of boost control. The ported waste gate seems to do it's job as we are holding a clean 6-7 lbs of boost. I'll up the boost in the future with an ABC but for now this is fine.

Overall I'm pleased with it coming together so well. I had a minor drip of coolant from a heater hose line, some oil from a turbo oil supply line dripped but other than that it has been smooth sailing.

I couldnt help but notice a lot of turns or what not on that rode you were on- dont try to go all initial d on yourself and end up oversteering into a tree or something and end up sendin that nice ride to the junk yard! or god forbit, hurt yourself! But either then that, nice car!!!!

hahaha

Hockey, thanks man i appreciate the comments, but I actually sold the GXL. I might be interested in a turbo vert in the future though, or more likely an RX3.

Prodigy, yeah the road I live on has alot of turns but I have no plans for a tv in the car so cartoons won't be a distraction. I plan on being safe, slow and steady all the way. I know I have a lot of learning ahead of me but this isn't my firs RX7, it's just the most bad *** one yet.

I plan on changing out the rear diff, tightening up the exhaust and putting a high flow cat on, get some springs and be all set for a long time. I have plans for the car for next year but it will stay pretty much like it is now until I can drive it better.

Edit - Just wanted to add that this is really the first car that I have owned with out power steering. I didn't really like te way it felt when I first got the car but I am beginning to appreciate the good solid feel for the road it has. Overall the car is getting more solid and feels good but I am still getting used to it.

i must laugh at you. Haha.
Why would you tell a clearly grown and responsible grown man to not do something he prob wouldn't do. He didnt speed more the 10mph over the limit if that at any time during the whole video. Plus he knows he cant drive a stick well so he isnt gonna pull teenager sh** like I would. This bothered me and thought i should vent. Dono why it made me mad tho... sorry just had to get it out there.

Thanks for all the good comments!! I'm just glad it's come to this point, it was on the jack stand for so long ya know?? At points during the build I questioned what i was doing, but today made it all worth it and very clear that it was the right thing to do for the 7.

if you think that it is hard going from an auto to a manual, try swapping between two manuals. in my other car, i find myself double clutching all of the time (you don't need to in my other car) and riding the clutch. nice car. i have a t II also. i am planning on starting a rebuild later this year after i get tired of just driving the car.

I still hold the clutch too long sometimes....but shifting the honda's bushingless/clutchless transmission is hit and miss 50% of the time...

Cool video, your rear end makes it sound like an F1 car! hehe

I'd do something about that soon, it's really loud.

Well

Thanks again for the nice comments, I am giddy like a school girl over this. I am just so relieved that it actually works.

When I bought in April of 05 it was a nice solid body with less than 500 miles on the remanufactured motor. The problem was that they used all of the stuff when they swapped the block, they also had the open exhaust on it. I was concerned with vac leaks and boost spikes, then it dared to idle funny one day. So began the tear down and the long list of improvements. Here is what I can think of as of now, this is not all inclusive either:

Rtek7 Stage 2.1 ECU Upgrade
(4) Venom 720cc Injectors w/ new connectors
255lph Rewired Fuel Pump
BNR Stage 1 Turbo Upgrade
SS Turbo Oil Feed Line
NGK A/Fx Wideband O2 Monitor
Autometer Boost Gauge
Emissions Block Off Kit
Racing Beat Downpipe
3” Straight Exhaust to Dual Tips
Double Belted Alternator Pulley
Clutch Pilot Bearing and Bearing Seal
F1 Stage 2 Clutch and Pressure Plate
J-Spec Transmission
Short Shift Kit
Brake Master Cylinder
Rebuilt LSD
NGK Wires
New Rear Axles
Blitz SS BOV
Intake
Custom TID
KYB AGXs
Mazdatrix Competition Differential Bushings
Mazdatrix Competition Motor Mounts
Atkin's Rotary Solid Thermal Pellet Upgrade
Front Main Seal
Rear Main Seal
Vacuum Spider
Coolant O-rings
Reconditioned LIM
LIM to Engine gasket
Fuel lines, injectors, grommets and o-rings
Oil metering pump lines
Thermostat
Thermo-wax Hose
New Fuel lines w/ t-clamps
Reconditioned Throttle Body
Vacuum Lines and caps
Reconditioned UIM
Radiator Hoses
Battery Terminals
TCSportline Front Strut Brace
RX7 Sport Spoiler
+GP Sports Body Kit (not installed yet)
