Lightbulb Recommendations for Cold Air's/Short Ram's

Im planning on getting a cold air or short ram for my car pretty soon
and i would like to know what types have been tried out and the like and dislikes about them such as preformance wise and the cost.

so basically name your brand , how much of a difference it made, and why you'd recommend this to someone else.

i'll try and update and compile a nice list(when it builds up of course)

this will help me decide which brand i should get.

:)

i wonder where you could go buy some plastic to make a box, that might work well. Spray some hi heat paint on it, and your good to go.

you guys read the other thread, you'll then understand, having aftermarket intakes do not perform as well as the stock one, your not getting any better airflow it's still going through the same AFM and TB, your just sucking more hot air which in the end does not benefit you in anyway, and your mileage will be even worse

Honestly, don't bother. To do it right, you have to shell out a good deal of cash, and will only see negligible gains.

ahh you shoulda been more specific, completely different if we're talking about a turbo'd vehicle, i have no clue really, it sucks so much more air, i'd assume bigger is better

you're still going to compress the same amount of air... actually less of it cause hot air is less dense.

stay with the stock air-box.

ONLY go for something aftermarket/custom that if you're getting rid of the AFM and have a way to tune.

i wish the GXL i had, still had the stock air-box.. the PO ditched it for an ebay special. car doesnt feel right compared to a friend who has a mint GTU

i would not agree... if you do it right, it can be good... i am currently working on a setup that is all custom fabbed... it will run straight off the TB to behind the shock tower... with a plastic air box that seals to the hood. Then i will use a small hood scoop and put it in the air box area to get cool air from on top of the hood. it should work well... no bends in the tube, and cold air.

wow

ok i had no idea that the stock box was better
but i've had a thought about how to keep cool air going in
seeing as how the cold air would sit behind the right hand headlight

you could purchase one of these babies:

and it would also help to keep the rest of the engine cool too
with a tII hood making the front end look something like this:

which i think looks pretty tight in the end
and also might help our hot air problem

i know im prolly not the first person hear about this
but im sure someone has tried this already...if so, does it work like i think it does????

or should i stop dreaming up crazy things liek this and just use the original boxed filter?????

no no... people on here have it stuck in their heads that it does not work. Read my ealyer post about my setup that i am prepping to do. I did a VERY similar mod on my MX-6 a while back. I know some people in the portland area and was able to get a couple pulls with just that mod done to the engine ( i also had a ton of weight reduction done to the car at the time, but we all know that doesnt matter on a dyno) and despite what they say, i showed a 5.1 gain in HP... now thats not to say that the stock sytem on a MX-6 sucks compared to a RX-7 setup, but those are good results in my book. You couple that setup with a GOOD header and exhaust and it those mods will compliment each other well. Hope this helps.

5.1 hp at 100 dollars or more dont seem worth it.. go to home depot plumb the intake to the front of the car outside the engine bay plant your filter and go with it..

There's someone on this forum who makes better vented headlight covers, from whom I bought one. if you want, I can try to find his name. They're pretty much useless without a cold air box, though.

What about the AFM? What ECU will you be running?

Also, vented headlight covers require the removal of the rubber behind them. Plus, they mix hot and cold air, which is still not as good as the straight cold air you get from the stock box. Unless, of course, you've fabbed up a way to keep the hot air out, but that's more money to be spent.

if you read the post it says BEHIND the tower.. close to the back of the car. Tip of the filter goes against the fender. No bends, ONLY outside air.

vented headlight cover wasn't in response to you.

What about the AFM though?
